Bear test required FYI
« on: May 30, 2019, 02:40:45 PM »
I wanted to put this in the deer section, as many of you (like me) probably buy the multi species tags just in case you come across a bear. There is a change in the regs this year that will trip a lot of people up who didn't closely read the bear regs on page 70:

BEAR IDENTIFICATION TEST
"Hunters that choose to hunt in GMU's located in grizzly bear recovery areas identified by the Department must successfully complete the annual WDFW online bear identification teat. Must score 80% or higher and carry proof that they have passed the WDFW test or an equivalent test from another state"

Black bear identification test required in GMUs 101, 105, 108, 111, 113, 117, 203, 204, 209, 215, 418, 426.

The test is pretty straightforward, but I hadn't heard about it yet. It takes a couple minutes to complete. It's 10 questions with pictures that you have to correctly identify. I completed it, printed the certificate (I shrunk the size down to about the size of a business card) and then laminated it with packing tape and threw it in my wallet.

Good luck!

Huh, I just went and looked, you're correct, it was required last year too (not in 2017 and earlier).

Well, I didn't do it last year and none of my party had heard about it. Hopefully this helps spread the message.

Any insiders have any idea why they don't include this in the Hunt Authorizations section of the licensing site?

Do they also test if it is spelled "B-E-A-R" or "D-E-E-R"?

They better start including areas further south. I have seen email from WDFW confirming the pic sent to them was a grizz.
Pic was taken north of near Teanaway/Apline unit border

I shrink the bear test certificate down to 2"x2" and tape it to the back of my bear transport tag.
