Recommendation? .410 for grouse
« on: August 13, 2019, 02:07:56 PM »
Looking for feedback. Would like to start using a .410 for grouse hunting. Looking for a gun under $500. Over under preferably, but pump would do with a good recommendation. Used or new.  Maybe someone has one they would like to sell as well?

Thanks!

Look into cz drake. Great looking gun. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I was on the market for a over and under and looked at alot. And read alot on them. On your budget in my opinion its the best you can get. I went with it and couldn't be happier. Great fit, looks good, functions great.
Couple details that came to mind. It does not auto eject. It will extract back for you to manually pull out. My opinion on that is they did it right. Due to a lot of 410 auto ejectors on cheaper models have issues with parts braking and such. This put that worry away.
Fixed improved cylinder and modified choke. Solid 20 to 25 yard shooter. But I've rocked some good 30 yard shots stone dead on pheasants and such. 6 shot was best from a 410 from what I've seen. Keep in mind any 410 does not have near the shot capacity. So keep shots within reason. Once one has reconized the capability realistically of a 410 they are very effective.
Full size frame. Lots of 410s come in small frames due to popularity with young shooters. At 6' 2" this guns size is still great fit.
410 is so much better for carrying a number of shells for a day of bird hunting. They are light in the vest.
And after going from a 12 guage to 410 they are so light with no recoil. I love it for hunting. And its fun to show off to the magnum shooters when you bag more birds then they do.
Lol
Hope this helps a little.

I have a stoager I bought from Dicks back when they weren't ....D*icks. Anyway I love that little shotgun, I think I got it on sale for like $320. Has extractors and a stainless receiver. Not so pretty that you worry about it behind the seat and fires everytime. You can find the blued receiver version at sportsman's or sportco last I looked for under 5 bills.
Shut up and Hunt!

You can get a Mossberg 500 brand new for about $250 from Walmart. I have one in 12ga and it's never let me down.

Thanks for all the replies folks! I'll keep that in mind Mr. Skyval...if you're even slightly serious about hunting blue grouse, I'd love too :) Did for years with friends' labs, just got back into it, walking mountain roads and listening for the drum. Something about a 410 over under that's missing from my safe.

I was up in the hills this last weekend chasing bear...let's just say I cant wait for september.

There's been a mossberg 500 in. 410 taunting me at the local walmart for a while now. $250, i usually see them closer to $400 most places.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

One thing to keep in mind on 410s is some come with a fixed full choke and they are not recommended for use with steel. So if ever planning to use steel keep that in mind.

I like 410's but I like 28's better, more options in shells.  :twocents:
