No moose in the Selway, wolves ate them all.

Whoops. Still having misplaced bad dreams about my Selway Hunt last year, I apologize. Please, carry on

Amazing day, called in my first bull moose! Hiked in about 2 miles and got to my spot at 7:30, cold as heck. Called every 15 minutes with cow, bull grunts and raking branches for 1.5 hours. Then I heard it, my first own bull grunt!! Took him about 5 minutes to show himself, on the road directly across from me, about 200 ish yards. He should be at least 40”, double front on one side, single on the other, that’s whats saved his butt for now! I played with him for close to an hour with many looks and possible shots. Had a blast going back and forth! I decided to let him live since it was only my second day, hope I don’t regret that decision! I left to go down the hill to look for my partner so he could shoot it, he’s looking for just about any size bull. I walked 300 yards from the bull and I see a forest service rig and a survey truck behind her!!!! They are there to gps the damn culvert right where the bull was, on oct 2 they have to do this! I was speechless, they will be there for 2 days. Hundreds of miles of locked up gated roads and they have to work on this one, unreal. Taking my buddy in there tomorrow morning anyway, hoping the bull doesn’t leave. No other moose seen tonight, but my buddy did take a pic of a grizzly crap, he put his hand over it and it was still warm! The forest lady told me there was a couple grizz living in the canyon I was hunting, great!!! Tired, bed time, up at 4:15 tomorrow again!

I took a pic but it’s from my cell phone about 200 yards away, it was my last look at him broadside! Not a good pic, sorry.

I would not let another 40 inch bull walk! One of my hunting partners drew this tag last year and he lives in the unit. He has hunted it his whole life. He damn near ate is tag! He finally got a 46 inch bull last week of the season. As I’m sure you have heard, the moose population has suffered big time!!! I’m shocked the permits have not been reduced drastically. Between the wolves, grizzlies, cats, and ticks, they are fastly disappearing.
I drew a tag in 2016 and shot a 40 inch opening day. Only saw one bull bigger in all the scouting I did and I don’t regret my decision to this day.
If it makes you feel better, 40 inches is above average in Washington state.
Good luck on your hunt and look forward to photos!

You get one chance to hunt moose in WA and you have A TWO MONTH SEASON! DO NOT SETTLE!!!!!! Hunt your hunt Jerry and if 40 isn't the mark and a single brow isn't the mark then just keep looking. You can't shoot the bull of your dreams if you shoot a "better than average and good enough".
