This drives me nuts! I’ve written wdfw several times about this what a joke that they cant or won’t fix this!  The bull category is a joke! They have made it harder to draw a bull tag over a quality tag! Example is grande ronde is a bull tag they give out 1 in each category if I remember right there are a couple hundred apps for 1 tag! This is a quality hunt with very large bulls in unit. Access is the issue and should be asterisked in regs when applying .

I also drew both deer categories

What they need to do is only have one category- BULL ELK.

This!

100% the only reason for our draw system is revenue.

I 100% agree with the one category“Bull”. I did draw a Quality Nooksack permit this year and an Antlerless permit. It sucks that I can’t decline the Antlerless permit so someone else can use it. I know for a fact I won’t even step foot in that unit due to drawing the Nooksack any Bull.

I agree but I don't want to ask for too much. That would be back to the old system, which was perfectly fine the way it was.

Yeah, there's some permits like that on the westside.  The quality bull permits for the area are in a general season gmu after archery and as muzzy is setting up.  The nearby bull permit is for gmus that don't have general seasons, just by permit only, but occurs during the general season dates.  To many it seems the bull is more quality than the quality bull.

Sucks that one of the permits will go un-used.  With how few they allotted it just makes the issue worse.
They really need a second draw for permits that won't be used.
OR
Let the guy who drew 2 tags harvest 2 animals.
If he had tags I'd agree, but permits I don't.  He knew ahead of time what risk he was putting the tag in for.

The issue isn't this fella taking the risk, it's the Permit that will go un-used, and not be issued to another applicant, who would use it.  Hence the second draw.

im no genious at math, however i do believe it is really simple multiplication to see that the entire draw system is purely for revenue, why not make a elk catagory and a deer catagory, if you want an antlerless tag, then make that your choice, this would change the draw odds big time.  but simple math at say 1000 applciations in a buck category for only 50 tags (or wahtever scenerio you want to make)  times the $7.50 app fee equals $7500, this is just for one example, now each species has multiple categories and this money adds up in a hurry.  total joke and financially driven. quality tags you are only given 2 options and at a steeper application price too.

How would this work for Rifle guys who want to hunt the rut on a quality tag?

There is still the issue of drawing both a Bull and Antlerless in the same season.  Any Elk maybe?  :dunno:

i had the mentalitiy years ago to build my bull points and then draw my quality, in the meantime id be gaining bull points, but lately after seeing the true odds, i dance with the devil and put in for oth just trying to draw a tag, and when i do draw, that will be the last time i buy that category. my buddy (lucky for him) drew a quality colckum tag and drew bull and cow a couple years ago thus making this year his last elk tag in washington  just a waste of mone

What I was saying is all special permits for bull elk would be in just one category. Instead of being split up into two.

Unless the dates are concurrent or tags out during the first, then it doesn't have to go unused.  I think quality permits are around 50% successful.  So he can hunt the second if the first is bust.
