Yeah, you guys are right.  I'm just a little bent out of shape about the few and far between places to long distance shoot on the west side.

No I get it. But if timberland I worked on all the sudden got opened up to guys shooting at all, much less 500 yards or more, I would be real nervous about working in the thick stuff!

I've been shot at both intentionally and unintentionally and neither were good experiences.  I also did timber layout ("forest engineering") for a couple years and would also be nervous with guys shooting nearby.  Was never shot at on that job but did have a cougar experience.

This is the reminder they sent out last year to permit holders. They  change stuff up year to year so it’s always a good idea to read the current year’s rules.  You’ll have to check the actual rule list  (not this reminder email screenshot that I’m adding) to see if chainsaws are okay instead of an ax. I’ve always carried an ax so I haven’t had to worry about it.

So I bought a motorized pass and expected to be mailed a key to get into the locked gate that controls access to the entire parcel, but have yet to receive one. How does that usually work? I am hoping I won't be at the mercy of whenever they deem appropriate to open/close the gates...

Your permit doesn't start until August 1st. They usually send the packets in July.

You might want to check your lease, if memory serves, the lease specifically prohibits target or recreational ie non hunting shooting.  That was a couple of years ago, but it was true in the Pe El N/S, Aberdeen, St Helens, and the Vail permitted areas.  Just check into it before you go out and get in a bind.

Weyerhaeuser doesn't usually close their lands for fire danger. Not since the pay for access system has been in place.

"Washington Fire Season is April 15 - October 15th". What you're proposing is they would have the gates locked for those dates then or longer if extended. That would make the permit almost null and void missing early archery deer and elk, early muzzy deer and elk, and first weekend of deer. Not to mention Spring Turkey.

I wouldn't buy the permit if I couldn't hunt or Access before October 15th. The second August 1st rolls around I am in there scouting for my season(s) ... I'm scouting all year though really. I just never caught the fire tools I needed but will carry them now. They are on my permit agreement and would assume they are on everyone's.

 During fire season, Permittee must carry a pointed shovel, an axe or Pulaski and a properly
functioning U.L.-approved fire extinguisher 5-pound ABC minimum rating.
 Permittee must call 911 if any fires are observed.

You know what "GRINDS MY GEARS" about this permit?  You can't target shoot per the agreement.  I can understand the need to prevent people from making a mess with paper targets, bottles, cans, etc. but where's the harm in long range shooting at steel? 

Fires. Or maybe there’s people in the brush cruising or thinning or picking brush.

Supposed to be shooting into a solid and sizable backstop, like a dirt bank...etc.

The permit document clearly says no target shooting.  It doesn't mention backstops, dirt banks, etc.

I am in the aberdeen unit, never been there before. This will be my first year buying a pass.

Drive and walk, drive and walk.  Use locate bugles, look for sign and move on if you see or hear neither.  I'm in North Pe Ell.  If you didn't see it, one thing Weyco has added this year is a guest pass that is good for a couple days (you have to tell them when you are going to use, which can be as late as the day before you do, if I remember correctly).  I don't know if it was their intent but what it allows for is bringing in a buddy once we have an animal down to help get it out.  We will be hunting close enough together if you wanna swap phone numbers in case of needing help packing.

Weyco charges 100 bones for the guest pass which is a bit more than pricey.  I had a buddy buy one last year and I helped him get a deer in the Vale area.
