Any Experience with Hogue rubber stocks?
« on: April 16, 2009, 01:20:26 PM »
I'm thinking of buying a Hogue brand rifle stock, as a replacement for either my Win. model 70 or a Ruger M77.  The original wood stocks are all beat up from years in the brush and abuse.  I like the McMillan stocks but paying over $700 and then having to wait up to 6 months for delivery is a major deterrent.  I like the Bell and Carlsons and HS precision stocks but the Hogue is half the cost.  My little brother had one on his Ruger 10/22, but I'm not sure how the full size rifle ones are.  Any past experiences or stories to relate would be helpful.  Thanks!

they are ok stocks...some people don't like the way they feel or handle...they are rubbery. i passed on one for my 10/22 because i didn't like the way they feel. if memory serves me, woodswalker on  here just got one recently and liked it.
you can also buy takeoff stocks all over the place for decent prices. if you look maybe on 24hourcampfire.com in the classifieds or go to ebay and search for what  you are looking for, shouldn't be too difficult to come up with a few options.

There are two Hogue stocks... the one with the bedding block, and the one that's just pillar bedded. The one with the block ($199-229) is a far better stock than the pillar bedded one ($99-120). Without the block they're pretty flimsy in the forend and tend to shoot a little irratic.

Another option would be a JRS laminated stock from Boyds... they run about $150 fully inletted and finished (sometimes cheaper on Ebay)... should be a straight drop in, and it's a much more stable stock than either of the offers from Hogue. Bed that baby up and it'll never move, or warp... and they're tough as nails.

Seen a couple guys hog out the interior of the back end... and remove a bunch of wood from inside the barrel channel... seems to me they could knock pert'near a half pound off one. For the money though, the HS used to be hard to beat... but I can't believe they want over $300 for them now.

Ok thanks for the input guys! That was kind of my gut feeling about them.  I've been scanning 24hourcampfire and sniperhide for used HS's or McM's, they're hard to come by right now.  Cabela's only has a limited style but they do carry Bell and Carlson's and the HS precision in a couple styles.

Might want to give McMillan a call... I've struck gold a couple of times by calling and letting them know what I'm looking for... they'll take a look in the back and see if they have a cancelled order that you can purchase. If y'ain't picky... sometimes you can get one without the 6 month wait.

Yep... Sometimes it works... more often than not it doesn't. But keep trying... I called three weeks in a row and finally scored a McM Classic for a Rem. 700 LA... pretty lucky... but I hated that stock, I'm an HS guy.

Evolution man... same way we went from dragging knuckles and swinging in trees... to slinging 200 grain projectiles at 3100fps.

Now... I, on the other hand... made it there, then counter-evolved back to the HS. Sometimes the highest level of evolution ain't the best way to survive... just ask the socially/environmentally/economically evolved Dems... no way they can survive... tough to be a parasite when the host decides it's had enough.
