Help, trail cam fail.
« on: June 25, 2019, 08:19:52 PM »
Put up a camera after baiting the area. Came back today after 48 hours hanging. Bait was all gone. But when I checked the chip it had all the previous usage from last winter and only a few picts of me setting the cam up two days ago. At that point it stopped with no further photos taken when I expected to have at least some shots of me leaving the area or coming back today. For the last shot on the chip there was no picture and the computer reported that it can't support Jpegs, though all of last winter's hang were fine.

the only thing I can think of was that the batteries may have given out even though they have not been used much. Any help from the more experienced?

My guess is reformat the card or use a newly formatted card and test. I akways check it once i set it.

When my trail cameras start acting weird, I do two things:

(1) Reformat the card.
(2) Change the batteries.

If they're still acting weird ... I'll pull 'em, and try them out at home, and see if they're really broken.

always test the sd card you will use at home and make sure its working. I also never swap cards anymore I download to tablet in the field and put same card back in cam to avoid any issues. Id make sure card is empty then re format with trail cam and test it.

Why keep the old pics on the card? Put the card in your computer, save the pics you want to save, then format the card.

Your description makes it sound like you reused the batteries from last winter. They may have gone bad after the first couple pics from setting it up this time. Cold nights and old batteries don't mix well either. Did you check its function at home after the issues?

Thanks everyone. I followed the advice, changed the batteries, formatted the disk. Reset the camera in the area where food was left. So far so good when tested, will know tomorrow when I check the disk. Any food that was left behind is always gone in 24 hours, so I should expect some good photos. Again thanks.
