Purchasing leftover multiseason deer tags
« on: June 30, 2019, 02:24:19 PM »
I understand that if you were drawn for a multiseason deer tag, the last day to purchase your tag is July 31, and at some point after that, if you had originally applied for a multiseason tag, but weren't drawn, you can purchase one.

This is the first year I put in for my multiseason deer, and I wasn't drawn. I'd really like to purchase one, but I'm going to be out of the country, with limited access to the Internet, through the first week or so of August. So I have a few questions:

(1) What's the process for purchasing a multiseason tag? Can you do it online? Or do you have to do it at brick-and-mortar store?

(2) When exactly will those tags be available for purchase?

(3) How long, typically, do they last before they're sold out? (My understanding is that the few unpurchased elk tags get snapped up almost immediately - but how does that work with deer?)

Not sure of all the details. If you go to the WDFW web site you might be able to find the information. In the past they have sent a email to unsuccessful applicants with the information on how to purchase the leftover tags. Good luck

:bdid:I bought a leftover last year.  How I understand it, you can buy it online if you haven't already bought your general deer tag.  If you have already gotten your general deer tag you will have to go to a dealer in order to forfeit your general tag in exchange for a multi season.  The game department will supposedly notify the unsuccessful applicants when the leftovers will be up for sale.  But I wouldn't rely on that as I don't ever seem to get notified by WDFW of anything of importance even tho they send me plenty of **** I don't care about.  I called them last year after the deadline and asked when the leftovers were going to be up for sale and found out that way.  Never did get an email.  As for how long they last, no real idea, it changes from year to year obviously and is on a first come first serve basis.  So I would recommend getting it done as soon as is feasible.  Last year there was several people in line with me and everyone got their deer multi but as you said you gotta be quick for the elk leftovers.   Good luck.

Thanks. I may give 'em a call, just to see. Either way, I'll try to make sure I get it as soon as possible. (I have my current deer tag, so I'll need to turn it in, so that sounds like brick-and-mortar.)

Go to a retailer and take your current deer tag. Purchase the multiseason and turn in your former tag. I would not be too worried if you are gone the first week, they don't sell out right away like the elk do. Good luck, have fun!

Just to wrap this up, I called the WDFW office today, and they said that the deer tags will probably go on sale sometime the week of August 5th. They indicated that I'd need to go into a brick-and-mortar reseller to purchase the tag (presumably for the purpose of handing in my existing tag). They also said that they haven't yet ever sold out, even well into the season. "There's always a first time, and we have been selling more, but so long as you move relatively quickly in August, there's almost no chance that they'll be sold out."
