Westport salmon
« on: July 04, 2019, 03:32:53 PM »
Today we ran north and caught one nice king and a silver and turned loose four silver's with a Finn. It's slow fishing only four cars in the parking lot on the 4th. We did have a few other bites fishing 150 feet off copalis rock.

Talked with a deck hand tonight off the boats I'll be going with tomorrow.   He said the coho bite has been hot!  Hopefully it will stay that way for tomorrow.  Hoping for a king or two as well for our party.

Coho bite is HOT!  Had our boat limit of 16 by 10am.  Caught around 40 total with one undersized king.   About a 40% hatchery to native rate.  Rock fish were harder to find, but once we did it was lights out for them as well.

Ran about 28-30 miles north of westport, catching the  on the surface all the way down to around 100 feet.  According to the the captain, the coho were big compared to what they've been seeing.  I would say around the 8lb mark on average, using my best guess.

A little weather for a couple days then back to 2 feet Friday and the weekend lots of fish just a ways north but also where you can get bottom fish so that helps.

I got the poles restrung with fresh line, and working on the boat all week. I should be down there around the 27th or 28th for a fish run. Then the big one we'll be there from Aug 9th thru the 19th

This pretty much nailed it. We were first boat north yesterday with a 5 am departure. Had our 6 man limit of salmon by 8 including one nice king that my Dad caught. Was very impressed with the size of the coho we caught. Not your typical early July coho as far as I'm concerned. Hit a rockfish spot and were done with everything by 10 am. Got one nice ling while fishing rockfish. Beautiful day on the water, although shorter than I wanted. That's the problem with good fishing I suppose.

Fished way south on the Stardust July 6th. Skipper put us on a pile of yellowtail, and the boat was full in short order. Salmon was so so...my group of 4 went home with 6 coho. Boat was no where near limiting. Appears the fishing has really picked up the last couple days.
Was a fun trip. Saw a group of grey whales. Had an 8' blue shark under the boat for a bit on one drift.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!
