early season socks

darn tough light hikers with coolmax are great. 15 ish bucks a pair, but you cant wear them out, and if you do, theyll send you a new pair

If they’re back in stock for the coming season, try out the wool socks at Costco.. I think they’re in the neighborhood of $10/3 or 4 pack. I’ve been using them for the past 3-4 years year round. Haven’t worn out a pair yet.

I’ve used a fair number of the other high end brands and the Costco socks are just as good for the money.

If there is a high percentage of merino in the sock, I wouldn't bother with liners. I haven't worn liners in a long time...

I never wear liner socks and I wear the same socks year round if I’m backpacking. Call me crazy. Liners work for some people and not for others. Honestly you’re going to need 2 pairs. They’re part of the most important pieces of gear you own in the mountains... your feet. Don’t skimp. It’s not like you’re buying a dozen pairs.

  darn toughs for me year round. Late season I may add a liner sock for a bit of extra warmth but otherwise same socks year round. I do switch to the over the calf for Oct on though. Love those things😍

Agreed. I plan to bring a couple pairs so I can rotate through them and hopefully keep me feet fresh. As for liners, I tried them last year and I was indifferent on them.

bought 2 pairs of darn toughs back in 2016 and one of them finally sprung a hole in them.  I know they will replace them but they were so good to me I'd feel little guilty taking advantage of their warranty.

Been using them exclusively during hot, September hunts. Been using during my training rucks as well.

I know you said "not $20 a pair" but I love the Darn Tough socks I get at REI. They feel great and have a lifetime warranty. You do anything to get a hole in them they send you a new set.

In the early season when I'm wearing light boots I wear these by themselves. I love them- super comfortable, keep my feet a good temperature. I wear them all the time when Im not hunting.

This is what I wear. I bought some of the same type of wool socks from Bass Pro a couple years ago.
This is all I wear with my hiking or hunting boots, Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter.

Darn Tough crew lite hikers are my favorite with a thicker and taller sock for winter - hunters or hikers.

You can literally send them in for any reason - they wear out, they don't fit, you don't like them, whatever.  They will e-mail you a code for credit and you can buy another pair.

I can get over 300 miles from a pair and then send them in and get another pair.  Plus, they are the best socks I have worn.  Google it and you will see they are well liked from PCT, AT and other long trail hikers, military, GoRuck and most other groups that put miles on and have tried most of the others.

Been using Georgia boot company socks I found at work sports. They have a light, medium and heavy. Pretty happy with them for around 10 bucks a pair. In my work boots for long days so like to keep my feet dryer and comfortable. Aren’t as nice as smartwools, but half the price.

Ps. I might be a little of a sock snob, or as my wife calls it fancy sock hoarder

Maybe its my size 15 state of mind.  I have a hard enough time getting the perfect boot.  If I can find a sock to get on my foot, Im thrilled.
