Cold Bore 1k yard challenge
« on: July 08, 2019, 09:04:04 PM »
I have been doing some shooting at 1k on paper from a bench.  I was talking with some other shooters and think it would be fun to have a cold bore 1000 yard hit challenge.  If we could get some people together we could throw some money in.  I was thinking (20) people or so would make it a good challenge.  A 12" plate at 1000 to represent a kill zone on an elk.  This would be a solo shoot.  No body spotting for you or giving wind calls.

I would take a stab at it, I only drop 31 feet give or take.  I imagine the 530 ft lbs left would at least wiggle the steel when I hit it.   :chuckle:

I’m thinking 338 and less.  More doing it for hunting type rifles to see how confident I feel in my wind calls and hits.  I would bring my 338 Edge.  Maybe if people list there locations we can get and idea of where to shoot at.  I have a few spots in mind up near Snoqualmie pass that you can shoot rocks at 960 and 1197

Woods are shutting down fast so better do it if you are gonna do it. My spot on state land got posted emergency closures this weekend. Sucks because I can get 700 all the way out past 2500 yards in that spot.

Also I'd say 30 cal and under. .338's are cheating :chuckle:

How about we shoot for pink slips?  :chuckle: ;) :)

- Multiple targets.
- No laser rangefinders.
- No spotters (calling wind holds).
- Limited time constraints.
- Shifty winds.
- High-angle targets.
- Different shooting positions.

Or we could all just go shoot a side match at an NRL or PRS match. Haha!

Dang small bore shooters............ :chuckle:
I just want to show up with my 20" barreled 375 Ruger and show you guys how it's done lobbing 300gr Partitions at like 2650 fps. If that doesn't work I'll drag out the 338 SnipeTac pistol.

I'd actually like to see it go the other direction, sort of like hunter's BR matches. Have a minimum bore diameter and case capacity. Something like .30 minimum and 75gr case capacity or greater and no muzzle brakes.

Then we'd all have to shoot muzzle braked 20# guns in a 6mm of some kind and complain about recoil like all the PRS shooters. :chuckle:

True story.  :chuckle:

Though some of those guys would surely give the big magnums a run for their money on cold bore 1000 yard shots.

Yep. There's plenty of 'em that own big thumpers and can get it done waaaay out past 1K.

Running my 6 Dasher that tips the scales at 24 lbs. certainly helps for settling the crosshairs down quickly, and watching trace and impact is awesome...and mandatory for competition. The thing doesn't recoil off target regardless of whatever hairbrained structure they make us shoot off.  Whacking a target at 1K with the little 105's out of the Dasher is pretty easy but the little pills get pushed around pretty quickly in variable winds. Plus, barking off 12 rounds in rapid succession is fine in the Dasher, but isn't conducive for long barrel life with the canyon crossers.

If I had the choice and needed to make a first round impact at 1K, I'd grab my 300 RUM Sendero contoured backpackable hunting rig every single time. That beast is a death ray and those 210's scooting out at 3150 fps are absolute hammers!
