Anyone hunt JBLM?
« on: July 12, 2019, 06:14:13 AM »
Anyone hunt JBLM for blacktail? Bear? Cougar? Elk? I wish there was a general forum to put this in. I did not want to break it into 4 species and make 4 threads. Anyways, looking to hunt JBLM for the first time this fall since I'm new to the area. I plan on hunting it alot actually and was wondering if anyone had any advice/tips.

JBLM is a tough place to hunt. Not a ton of deer or elk but the quality is their. Won't see many animals but they are their, still hunting is the way to go.
You will see more bear sign and coyotes then anything else  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Limited areas that are huntable by the Range Control,  only few areas open for MF, but most open for archery.

Been hunting it for many, ,many years now, but mostly for waterfowl any more

I’ve hunted it off and on the last few years. Never had any luck. I’m told there are nice bucks there though. If you decide to hunt it, choose archery, range control and the powers that be seem to not like rifle hunters.

I hunted deer. There’s a decent amount and I had opportunities. Not many elk though.

I'm an archery guy. I need to buy my tags yet. I've seen some nice blacktails there, just not many. Looking forward to checking it out.

There are some elk, but not big herds. Some nice blacktail bucks but they've permanently closed several of the good range areas due to endangered birds and butterflies (not kidding). As others have said, archery is your best shot. Buy a bear tag. There are some nice bears there.

ya I'm doing archery, ive heard its the way to go for post. ive gotten all the permits to be able to access the TAs (when they're open). I've been out scouting for signs of bear this last month and have narrowed down two general areas (north eastern area and south western) of decent amount of signs of bear but nothing that has pointed to a really solid spot. I see a lot of post of people saying they see a good amount of bear on JBLM so hopefully I'm in the right area. ive missed the last two hunting seasons here do to deployments and TDY so this is first year for me out here.

I hunted deer during rifle.  Like all other blacktail hunting, the few days closes to Halloween and Halloween itself were the best by far.

Get to the outdoor recreation center early before the season so you’ll be sure to get all he requirements taken care of.

:yeah:
And if you are going to use a firearm you will need to have it registered. I stopped using the shotgun range due to the registration requirements. Every time the base commander changes you need to reregister.
