This season goes from the middle of next month until the 24th of September.  Honestly, if given my druthers, I'd wait until the bucks have hard, polished horns to hunt them.  Velvet is cool, but I think it is second to dark, shiny antler (just my preference).
That's not an option for me though.  I am a high school teacher, so this hunt will have to be done prior to me going back to work on the 26th of August (the main reason I put in for this hunt).
No chance for hard horn there, so yes...  Velvet it is.  Major consideration will be getting the antlers and cape into a cooler within 2 days of harvest.

Dont give up hope, I shot a buck on August 27th one year that was hard horned and polished up!

He was the 45th buck I laid eyes on and the only one hard horned though. Still a chance!

Maybe I'll get lucky Thanks

Thanks Mike.  You have a big hunt planned this year?

Well, Little Pathfinder and I are packing the truck.  Leaving tomorrow night, pulling an all-nighter to get there.  That will give me a full 24 hours to scout before opening day.

I'm rooting for an epic hunt for you two.  Inches of antler are nice, but the lifetime memories you are making are irreplaceable.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I've got a buddy in there with his kid.  Plenty of nice bucks around - he's having a tough time talking his kid out of shooting velvet 180'"bucks.   :chuckle:

Deer were laying pretty low this weekend with that terrible full moon. Bucks were bedded up before daylight and staying down until dark. Had some success glassing for those mid day bed changes though. Hope they are having fun. Weather was awesome and this week will be a cool one.

There were some good deer around; lots of bucks.   One of the issues with that tag is the giant old mature deer that don't score.   There are some misconfigured deer in there that are pushing 35' wide and are absolutely giant...might be a 2x3 or a crab 4.
