Selkirk GMU 113 Elk
« on: July 28, 2019, 12:56:50 PM »
Talked to a few biologist that said there were quite a few elk in this unit. I see that it is any elk for archery. Does anyone have any experience with this unit? I'm sure the locals are pretty tight lipped. Saw some massive antler racks on a few barns. I spent some time near Cooks Lake and Cee Cee road. Didn't see much sign. Looking to check out behind Sullivan Lake and the Salmo-Priest Wilderness next week. New to hunting and not from that corner of Washington. Any advice would be much appreciated!

This is probably one of the most secretive topics in Washington hunting world..

I checked out this area once and made a trip over to do some walking and driving around.  I came to the conclusion I would need to spend more time and driving than I was willing to do.  One biologist I talked to said a bunch of elk from Hanford were transplanted in the area but some actually went all the way back to Hanford(this is what he told me) and some went into Idaho.  He said some of the local elk stay on private land. I found a big pile of elk droppings near Mt. Washington amongst a lot of moose droppings, but that is in another district, I think 117.

I met someone that runs hounds for the tribe and he said he sees quite a lot of elk.

I would never choose to hunt 113 if I was starting from scratch.  Alladin or even 117 would be my choice if I had to go in the corner.

That being said, there's pockets of elk here and there.  Enjoy the crazy amount of hunters chasing a very small herd of elk.   :IBCOOL:

Just curious, if you were to hunt 117 would you go towards the dry more open westside? Or stick on the Pend Oreille River?

Thought I would also bow hunt elk there since I drew a moose permit but not sure it’s worth any vacation time.  Haven’t seen any sign and talked to a logger who has seen 2 cows in 20 years.

guy must not hunt or pay attention to be a logger in those mts to only see 2 cows. There are pockets of elk in all of these NE units and can be pretty good hunting if you know where they hang. As mentioned this is the most tight lipped areas in WA

If you've watched all the 'born and raised outdoors' episodes......this isn't your hunt.

To be fair to the loggers, it was a brush cutter working for the loggers that told me this.

113 is a sad thing to me.  In the last 9 years I've killed 3 bulls in 113, but none in the last 5 years.  I have many cameras in my good spots in there.  7 years ago I would get hundreds of elk photos on my cameras every summer.  In the summer and fall of 2018 I got more mountain lion and bear and wolf photos than I did elk photos.  Only a handful of elk photos in my "honey holes."  A mountain lion also killed one of my pack goats, and state houndsmen wound up killing the cat.

The elk are fewer than ever in 113.  The cougars and wolves are stressing them badly.  I now hunt Idaho and Montana and only elk hunt Washington as an afterthought every fall.  This year I was lucky enough to draw a Quality elk tag, but otherwise, Idaho would be my primary elk hunt.  Idaho is 10 times better elk hunting than any OTC Washington area.
