2019 bear

I shot my first bear last night at about 7:30! After sleeping in and missing my before work hunt and going to work I got home to find that my brother had come to full draw on a bear he had called in and then it ran off when it saw him pulling back his bow! I immediately grabbed all of my stuff and started hiking to the area even though I was skipping supper that was almost ready and it was still plenty early-before six pm. I got withing 100 yards of where my brother had called it in and heard something crashing around in the salal. I mouth squeeked for about 20 minutes but could only get it to move around and not come into sight. I decided to just walk the rest of the way to my treestand and use the foxpro to try to call the bear in. After about an hour of calling I decided  to just go home and turned of the call. Then I heard something walking in my direction so I just sat in the treestand and waited. when it first came into the patch of trees I couldn't get a shot at it even though it was only 30 yards away  because of all the trees it then turned and started walking straight towards me I got ready and when it stepped into a open patch at 8 yards I held myself together long enough to shoot it. when I shot it just dropped I then managed to just about drop my 30-06 and myself out of the treestand because I was so excited I couldn't stop shaking. after a few minutes I climbed down and went over to it, tagged it and took some pictures. after gutting It out I ran about 1 and a half  miles home and got a few of my brothers to come back with me to skin and quarter it out. it took longer than I expected because I was trying to keep the hide good enough to get it mounted and save as much meat as possible. we started the pack out at about 10 (2 and a half hours after I shot it) but the hard work of taking care of it and packing it out because now I am the first person in my family to have shot a bear My shot had gone right through the close side shoulder about 4 inches down from its back and came out about halfway down its body right behind the far side leg so I am kind of suprised that it droped because I didn't hit the back bone (but happy because I did not want to track a wounded bear in that thick brush) I have to thank god and my dad for helping me to love the outdoors and get to shoot this amazing animal.

Great story and good job on a successful kill. From the way you described your shot placement, it doesn't surprise me that the bear dropped like a rock. Those quartering to rifle shots that take out the skeletal super structure in their front end are devastating to all game animals. It's my favorite shot with a rifle. I'm happy to see a young hunter get out and put the time in to learn the area, find the animals, and then go kill one. Your family will thoroughly enjoy that meat for a few months now.

Mast taxis charge by the foot, they measure from nose to tail, I think most will be between $150-$200 per foot. Ask them if the hair/hide looks good?

If you can't afford a rug you can freeze it or soft tan it too.

an open mouth rug will cost you between $900-$1200 for that bear i would say.  I paid about $1000 for my last bear.

I had Meyers in battle ground smoke the hind quarters on this years Idaho spring bear. Turned out great. Tastes like ham! Ward’s will also smoke em.

Grind up into breakfast sausage is great too!

175-250 per ft depending on the taxidermist. My black bear that was 5.5 ft cost me like 1300.

Bear is good for anything. Except cooked to less then 165 degrees. If I had to say it’s best for something it would probably be sausage due to the fat. but really we love it cooked anyway. Bear ribs might be my personal favorite. Don’t forget to render the fat for cooking.
