Not enough shoulder bump?
« on: August 03, 2019, 06:53:16 PM »
Curious what are indicators that you didnt bump the brass shoulders enough other than a little stiff bolt closing?  Getting that .001 or .002 shoulder bump isnt that easy.  Seems that I am either too short or maybe a tag long.  Was thinking I wasn't bumping enough do to some little indicators I have been getting.

Sometimes the sizing die can actually move the shoulder forward a small amount from sizing the body. Tight chambering is really the only indicator you need for shoulder bump. Keep moving the die down in small increments until it chambers easily

Yes I got that part.  Just curious other than tougher bolt close what are indicators?  Had some weird primer issues that I thought might be related.

What’s the primer issues?  I have never had them from not enough sizing.  Only
Time was fire forming. Best way is to pull your firing pin spring/shroud and do it by feel.  .0025-.003 isn’t going to hurt anything.

I had 2 slightly punctured primers a couple grains below max over the last month of shooting.  CCI primers seem to show pressure signs early.  No other pressure indicators like sticky bolt.  If I am correct, today I noticed a round that was a little tougher than normal to close the bolt.  When I fired that round the primer had a pretty good crater.  The other three same charge, but no issue closing the bolt had no cratered primers.

What kind of action? What’s firing pin diameter?

How close are you seating your bullets to the lands?  If you're loading them close and you had some get away from you on your OAL and they were touching, that would give you a harder closing bolt as well as spike up your pressure.

Get some skips die shims. Makes it a little easier to adjust your shoulder bump.
