B.C's Seymour Narrows is nasty

Fished coho up near Seymour narrows, I think I would of crapped doing this. How did he not prop foul that line?

Fished right there during slack tide..Did not pay attention and  tide changed and a huge whirlpool almost took me and my 16 ft. Sea Runner for a ride..Scary

Lots of guys here can comment. Those narrows are famous. And that operator is a tool.

I have heard tales of small skiffs being sucked down in whirlpools and logs rising out like Polaris missiles after being sucked down.

I dove the Sechelt rapids (different than then Seymour narrows) - great drift dive.

Seems like waiting for a slack would be better to get that tanker down the inlet - could have been an environmental disaster if it tipped.

I've been thru Seymour Narrows a few times in small boats.  We carefully and deliberately waited for the tide conditions we wanted, calm once and just starting our way one time.

On the car ferry from nearby Campbell River to Quadra Island, I have been on it when a whirlpool spun the ferry more than 90 degrees in seconds. 

Re whirlpools:  one time kayaking in the Fraser River I decided to paddle through the edge of a six inch diameter pure whirlpool that was the center downdrain hole in the middle of a 20 foot wide swirling boil.  WOW!  I will NEVER do that again!  It grabbed the stern of my kayak and jerked it down, twisting as it went, bow going high.  I had some speed underway and managed to squirt out of its grip before it pulled the boat on down.  Man that thing was powerful, way more than it appeared to me.

The ones in Seymour Narrows are waaaay bigger...

Anytime there is a "narrows" around the NW, it's going to be western during tide changes.  There are places all over the San Juans that are amazing to watch even during normal tide changes.

I have fished late coho up the narrows several times,,,,,,,,amazing fishing with late Northern COHO up to 20 plus pounds.  I posted this because I figured some guys who travel/fish the inside of the island would have some stories.  You can literally see/feel your boat is running up hill when you head in on an outgoing tide and vice versus.  Pretty cool feeling.

Yeah, it's the sideways movement that always makes me a bit uneasy.  When your boat suddenly slides sideways 10 yards the pucker factor goes up considerably.

Came southbound thru there on the tug one time with an 360' barge in tow and a fair tide doing 14kts. You can go squirt'n thru there like oatmeal thru a sick Swede. I think it was Spike Rock they blew up there years ago. Largest man made explosion at the time.
