Cold calling
« on: August 05, 2019, 11:04:42 AM »
I’ve never called/ or killed a bear. I was curious if it’s worth it, or a waste. I know being in the woods is never a waste but was just curious. The place I’ve been the past couple days has very little berries yet and I’ve not seen any fresh sign but a little elk sign. Any advice would be awesome thank you ahead of time. The place I’ve been hunting is out of green water, and yes away from the road. Thanks!

What kind of call would work better? I have a go pro and have rabbit distress (jack and cottontail) and also have a black tail dawn distress as well.

Cold calling works for certain, BUT trust me your percentages go way down when compared with calling in an area with good fresh sign.  Any of those calls will work.  I have had better sucess with a coarser/raspy type call then the higher pitched rabbit in distress calls, but it just may be a personal confidence thing more than any particular sound or pitch.

Thank you guys for the info! I wish I had more time to get out and scout for bear as I’m spending more time scouting for deer and elk! What do wear side bears like becides berries? Good things to look for when glassing?

If you are out scouting for deer and elk, then you are out scouting for bears as well.  ;)  Good luck this fall!!

Ya that is true just never pay attention to looking for bear sign at all. Well cold called last night with no success on the black tail fawn distress call for about 2 hours. Did get into a small herd of elk and 1 dandy bull tho!
