Straight-walled rifle cartridges required for hunting...where??

Was looking through my latest Cabela's/Bass Pro catalog and came across these new Winchester 350 Legend cartridges.   

Says they are designed to function reliably in AR rifles, for use in states that require straight-walled rifle cartridges for deer hunting.

Any idea which states have this requirement and why??   Seems like with all the things that could be required in a hunting round, this makes no sense.

Some states treat these as "primitive weapons" same as muzzle loaders.

I think Ohio and Indiana allow these.  They generally don't allow higher powered rifles if I remember correctly because of the smaller lot sizes and lack of good back stops.

That's funny, I saw the same ad and had to look up the cartridge. Looks like the restriction only applies to a couple of mid-west states

The 350 legend is an interesting chambering; similar ballistics to a 35 Remington on an AR platform.  If I hunted in one of those states this would be a must have for me. 

It might be anyway.  I could see plinking steel with hand loaded .357 magnum like rounds in an AR.  Plenty of cheap bullets around to feed it.

The restrictions in other states is always interesting to me.  The 350 Legend was invented to service Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, etc. states that changed "shotgun only" regs to allow straight walled smokeless cartridges < 1.8" length restrictions (to limit powder and thus range).  Most guys were shooting rifles that accept pistol cartridges and the 350 Legend looks to be an interesting option for them.  Iowa specifically mentions pistol cartridges in their regs, am curious if the 350 Legend will be allowed in there now (350 Legend was invented after the Iowa law went into effect).


Unrelated to 350 Legend, I find it interesting that some states like Louisiana, etc. allow single shot 35 caliber and up for "primitive weapons" season.  CVA has been selling quite a few more of their "Hunter" model of rifle lately with the law changes in the various states.   I get that it's just a single shot, but calling a rifle shooting a 35 Whelen cartridge a "primitive weapon".....

I remember when the law changed in ohio to allow straight law cartridges. There was a rush on .44mag, .45 lc, .45/70, .444 ect. People were playing ridiculous prices for legal lever guns and single shots just so they could hunt with them that coming year. Everyone at our family deer camp was jealous when i arrived with my custom 1895 guide gun that i had owned for years out here. It was like AR 15 panic buying but for old fashioned guns and ammo. Now there are a good number of wild cat straights including the .350 legend.
