Isn't it illegal to do your own clearing in national forest land?

Technically, putting a salt block out is illegal too.

Can you quote this technical source?

That’s some BS! Wish I could help but they don’t look familiar to me. I’ll show some of my friends and see if they recognize them. We need to watch our backs out here.

On federal land it is illegal although that law isn’t followed very often.

It's interesting that one would moan about assumed illegal activity, yet indulge in another.  Just my thoughts.

These two "illegal" activities are nothing alike, chopping a tree so its a 'booby trap' is a crime of turpitude, clearing an area and applying salt does not involve a moral turpitude or intent to harm someone.  And I'm still not certain your assertions that it is even a crime is true in either case.

@Quaka Wacka
The way the tree was chopped reminds me of a forestry worker, that is a specific pattern for a specific purpose.
I don't think random people would chop a tree like that.

Illegal is illegal, yet is there absolute proof that it was those in the pictures that cut the tree?

As for the cutting of trees from a decommissioned skidder road, well I can tell you that that is pretty much illegal.  The salt block, well that could also be illegal because intentionally leaving "trash" in the Forrest is a ticketable offense.  I don't know the specific federal code, but I do know of several who have been charged for such offenses.

Can we combine the two threads about the same subject  :dunno: mods?
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I don't know the specifics of that forest, but it isn't illegal to put salt in most national forest, cattlemen have been doing for years and years.
WDFW allows a bucket worth of bait, so that isn't an issue.

If you assert something is illegal, due diligence would ask that you quote a source unless its obvious.   As I said, I'm not sure it is illegal in this case, national forests are a case by case basis.

poaching a live tree is always illegal, so no legal source would be needed on that one (obvious).

We don't know that these people did it, the OP say's it was, so face value here?  OP probably has more pictures?

It is illegal to damage or cut trees on public or private land without permission and these two losers deserve to be prosecuted for doing so. Not just because they violated the law but because they are a**holes for screwing with someone else's camera and intentionally trying to injure the owner. Lock em up!

It's in the code of federal regulations. I don't agree with it being illegal either but salt kills the grass and animals will make the area worse and attract invasive weeds. Some areas are anal about people putting salt blocks out.

I was called by the LEO that works on my forest and was told that I had a week to remove my salt blocks or he would write me a ticket. A biologist found one of my cameras and reported me.

I’m quickly reminded why I don’t get online and post much anymore.

Wadukie- I’m sorry your life is so miserable, that this is how you get your kicks. I hope things turn around for you. I know your cousins, best friends, coworkers son in law got a ticket for doing the exact same thing, but one would have to get awfull mouthy with a LEO to get a ticket for cutting back alder on a skidder road. I’m curious what law (specifically) your citing that makes this illegal?

To the mods, combine away. Sorry for the double post, wasn’t sure which category it went in.

KFHunter- I thought the same thing about the cut. It was very intentionally back cut.

As far as salt being illegal, I was unaware that it was an issue. Through the SAR work, I know and chat with the LEOs frequently. When I pull over to chat with them I tell them I’m packing salt and checking cams. I guess I should specifically ask them. I certainly don’t want to be out of compliance or risk a ticket.  I imagine it will depend on the circumstances. If I dump a bunch of salt in a grassy meadow or near a stream I would expect complaints. On an old road bed or scraping back a layer of duff and pine needles to ash or pumice isn’t as likely to garner any attention.  As with all things common sense still applies. But I still need to check, so thanks for the heads up.

Thanks to all those who contributed constructive input to the discussion.

Interesting that I ask a question and I'm attacked.  If I offended you in any way, I apologize, but I don't think it actually warrented a personal attack.  If you knew me, you would know that I rerelly post on here anymore.  Sorry I asked the questions or stated that I know people, people that I know well, that have received tickets for either leaving minerals or such, or for clearing trees off of forest land.
