cougar measuring for full mount?
« on: August 23, 2020, 07:02:06 AM »
For any taxidermists on here. Do you have a reference i can print to have with me for measuring all the necessary measurements that are needed for a full mount on a lion. Reason i ask is the area i hunt there is no way i'm packing it out whole.I'm good at skinning and caping so no worries on that end, just need to know what all measurements are needed to make it easy when it goes to form ordering and mounting for the taxidermist. Thanks

Great question. Here’s a totally honest answer....I would never taken the measurements, ESPECIALLY on a cat, at the word of the client. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk or anything but measurements can be tricky and forms are expensive, so even tho I would be given a measurement I still would go through the process of measuring the cat several times before moving forward on form ordering..
To answer your question tho more specifically, there are several measurements that are needed on a cat, or any full mount for that matter. Nose to eye (forward corner of the eye to tip of the nose), circumference (at its greatest point in the belly), length (tip of the nose to the BASE, not tip, of the tail), span between ears (not always needed), and tip of nose to base of skull (also sometimes not required). Keep in mind tho, just as with caping these take practice and time to get right and can significantly change to be incorrect if the cat is not positioned correctly, either in unskinned and skinned status.
No matter what pose or form your taxidermist uses there’s usually always significant modifications that have to be done to the form which is very time consuming as well as repetitive....hence why full mounts are $$$$$.
Hope this helped, good luck!

Thanks a bunch joel. That helps a lot.
I would assume any taxi would do their own measurements. I like to bring the best possible product to them to make sure i get the best product back. I was thinking it would be nice to use as something to double check to and if something was different then that would raise a question.
I've heard so many horror stories from taxis and seen first hand the poor handling of the animal before you guys get it and it's sad to not put forth the extra effort to make your guys job easier or at least give you the best possible hide to start out with.
