Elk, what's better eating?
« on: November 04, 2019, 11:31:56 AM »
If you're one of those hunters that doesn't care about antlers and you're after meat and you have a younger three point standing in front of you and a big old bull with a big rack which one is going to be better eating?

I've only ever shot a cow and she was delicious.

For meat I'd shoot the 3 point....Then again, any elk is better than no elk.

I'm shooting the big bull because there's likely more meat there to eat over the 3 point.

Taste wise they are the same.  The older bull will have tougher meat.  I'd shoot the 3 point as the amount t of meat difference is not a whole lot but you get get better quality meat.
Right wing shooter, I aim for the left!!!

Nowhere in your incoherent rambling did you come close to what can be considered a rational thought. Everyone is now dumber having heard it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

3 point if you prefer steaks, mature bull if you prefer burger.  Those are just playing the odds though, one of the toughest elk I've eaten was a raghorn that should have been perfect (September, killed with one shot while feeding, no idea there were humans about).  I like to do a test steak from one of the rounds to assess tenderness and flavor, that helps determine whether it's majority steaks or burger and pot roasts.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

The big bull is going to taste better, cause I'll see them horns on the wall with each new bite I take.

I've ate 2 spikes and a big 7 point.  7 point ranked right up there with the spikes.  I think it's really a dice roll.  Maybe I've got lucky but never had a bad elk.  Deer on the other hand...

They really don't make bad tasting elk, just bad meat care after the fact.  Shoot the bigger bodied one for sure, there will noticeably more meat, plus the wall decorations as mentioned above.

I've had deer that were a bit less than fabulous as well as a big old antelope buck that had a taste all his own, but the elk I have eaten part or all of were all great meat.

Elk eat primarily grassy stuff while deer eat primarily browsey stuff and I think that makes all the difference.
