Dehydrating recipes for backpacking
« on: August 19, 2019, 05:20:39 PM »
Im tired of store bought dehydrated meals. Anyone have good ideas for DIY dehydrator  meals/snacks for pack in hunts?

A stew or chili would probably be good, Ryan Lampers has a good podcast on the topic it’s episode 10.

My new favorite is make a batch of,pulled pork in gravy then dehydrate it. Add some, instant mashed potatoes to it on the mountain.

I have  no clue how they are gonna turn out, but I've been prepping some meals for September.  So far I've dehydrated pulled pork, elk burger, black beans and spaghetti.  The burger and beans are going in a tortilla, the spaghetti should hydrate ok, and the pulled pork will need something to go with it.  I've rehydrated the pork and tried it......a little chewy and kind of bland with the water on it so it will need some kind of sauce.  I think the gravy is a good idea.

For breakfast, I've got some oatmeal packets with dehydrated apples, mangos and blueberries.

Anything with gravy I just add powdered gravy mix. Turns out better than dehydrating already made gravy :twocents:

I do small elbow noodles, burger, mixed veggies, and brown gravy. It's pretty dang tasty

Be careful with the gravy, too much and it will be powerful salty.  I have it separate and add to taste rather than mixed in with everything else, especially when you don't make the same recipe twice.

Spaghetti and Spanish rice are definitely a few of my favorites. Big cans of costco chicken are super easy to dehydrate. I like just simple dried chicken and a healthy portion of idahodian mashed potatoes, and some peas and carrots.

Curious how burger & rice will re-hydrate. How much water to add how long to simmer?

very well. I've never gotten real scientific  with the water. Just add it till it looks right and I've never had an issue.

I'd highly recommend using couscous as a base carb when making your own meals. The grocery store has 3-6 different boxes of different flavors. Buy whatever looks good. Dehydrate whatever protein and veggies you like, dump the couscous straight from the box into your baggie, put in your dehydrated protein and veggies and away you go. No need to precook and the dehydrate the couscous. One of my super easy and  delicious meals is chicken breast diced, browned and cook with a cam of cream of mushroom soup. Dehydrate after cooking. Add to a bag with garlic couscous, and whala, one *censored* dinner.
