Would it be for trying to stop a charge or to harvest one?  :dunno:

I would think any 240grn SP would do the trick but the nosler partition handgun bullet is awesome as are hornady's XTP's. I use Hornady XTP's and while I've never shot a bear with a handgun I wouldn't hesitate with that load. Buffalo Bore makes some great handgun hunting loads you may want to consider.

If it's a Black Bear Gutpiles on the right track. SP240gr. I would even go soft, solid, soft solid. Any thing bigger I would look at a 300gr hot load. Or better yet a 460 or 500 mag!!! Here is a link to some hot 44 mag.

Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference. Marines don't have that problem.

:)I have cut two 240 grain winchester Soft points out of a black bear. They penetrated into the neck about 3 inches, no mush room, I dont think they hurt the bear one bit. delivered from about 10 feet from a 7.5 inch barrel Blackhawk. The bear was killed with a 30/06 in the end. it was a black bear about 250-300 lbs.

I would use nothing less then the Garrett hard cast. about 325 grain or larger. I would not even consider any soft point or hollow point.

I ahve been in on taking 3 blacks with hand guns.

I handload, and my bullet of choice is a 300 gr. Sierra jacketed Soft Point.  They will not even expand on a deer, but work like magic on elk, and someday hopefully a bear.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

This would do the trick for ya Rasbo.  Just yell out those ballistics as you walk into the woods.  The bears will die of fright and all you have to do is pick them up.

Buffalo Bore or Winchester Platinum are both good and they make it in some big slugs.

Believe what you want, from someone who has done it or someone who talks abut it. I am not sure what impact price has on performance. :chuckle:

I'd probably stick with 300 jacketed softpoints.  I took a deer at 10 yards, in the neck with a 240 jacketed soft point factory ammo, out of a 7.5 inch superblackhawk, and it did not exit.  It did not hit bone as well.  It did mushroom though.  I keep thinkin the 300 would be better.

Rasbo, if you see a guy up there with a Encore in his hand give a holler, it's probably me walking back to my truck after a calling session with a spring bear.

The biggest dear i ever got was with a .44mag. It was a rifle but i had some Hornady 240grn XTP's.  I shot them thru my ruger m77 .44mag rifle and they drive tac's at 100 yards.  I busted a real nice 5pt at 35 yards.  Double lung shot.  He ran about 40-50 yards and dropped!  Didnt ruin any meat!  Later on that day my uncle filled his doe tag with same gun.  80 yards right thru the lungs.

Never had a Black Bear walk away from a 44 mag wound and have gotten several that way.... Use the hard cast, heaviest you can find.  As folks have mentioned the Buffalo rounds are what I used.  Black bears die just as easily as every other game if properly hit.  No need to go out and buy a 460 or 500...  Over kill IMO... Unless you want one then that a different story altogether...
