3 cougars or not?
« on: August 23, 2019, 11:17:06 PM »
I put together this video of 4 trail camera clips.  I think it is 3 separate cougars and I am curious of your opinion.  Also I am not very familiar with cats, do these look big, small, otherwise?  It was a bitter sweet day to check cams because someone stole the card out of one of my cameras, another one took pictures of a weed until it ran out of battery, but this is the first time I have ever gotten pics or video of a cougar.

I guessing more than one. I've gotten trail cam pics with two and three in the frame.
I'm not sure.

Very common to see mom and last years kittens until the next fall, at which time they can be close to the same size and hard to distinguish on camera.

Thanks for the replies.  Is there any good way to hunt them other than getting lucky?

Looked at the video several times, stopping and starting to look more closely at details.  I think it is multiple cougars alright, and at first assumed a mama and near adult youngsters.  Could be, but I am surprised to not be able to see the spots and bands of dark on the inside of their legs.  Maybe the spots and bands are there and just not showing on the video.  Young cougars keep those marks on the inside of their legs a long time, usually into early adulthood.  If not a family group then...?

Its interesting you mention that because when I rewatch the video in the highest quality I can see stripes on the inner front legs of the last two.

Good, that confirms a couple of youngsters. Inner front is where they seem to show the most.  Teen age cougars! My resolution/close-up is not all that high and I was wishing for a sharper view.
