What lakes to fish with kayaks near Twisp?

Booked the wife and I into  B&B south of Twisp for our anniversary.

Planing on hitting the lakes with in 50 miles to fish with the kayaks.
We do t troll.
We like to sit and mooch off the bottom.

Any suggestions on Lakes to try? Not into a lot  busy spots ,prefer quieter places.

Not fly fishing only, selective gear rules. Single barbless hook, no bait or scent. Good late summer and fall fishing in there sometimes. Used to be great, has slid downhill for a few years now.

I'd say Pearrygin would probably be best bet for fish, but will be the busiest. Patterson is nice, and has a lot of variety in it.

Yeah, he's kind of new. Our family has been staying at Big Twin for the last 40 years, every year for the opener, and multiple times through the summer. The old owner passed away a year or so ago and his son and daughter took over operation. I think there's still some learning going on  They're nice people though, and seem to making some good improvements there.

I stayed there in 1992 and again in 2017. I like it too.

I learned about it from an old issue of Washington Fishing holes in the 80's. They used to have a campground feature in every issue. Still have a box with every issue from like 82 or 83 thru the early 1990s I think.

Dad has fished it a few times, and it can be very good. It's small and get's warm though, so I'm not sure how the fish bite mid summer. Others worth trying in the area would be Campbell as already stated, Cougar, and Frost. I know Frost has some big fish in it. Not sure on the regulations though. I would definitely look at Black Pine. Doesn't get much prettier setting than that, and lots of cutthroat to catch.

Blackpine will be one of the nicest if you are in to ambience.  Fish are smaller brookies.  I love it there. I wish they hadnt made the dock so nice. 

I wouldnt do Pearry this time of year.  Good in spring before the ski boats hit it.

Campbell and Davis should be good. Check regs

Patterson has variety as mentioned. Some huge bass now

As mentioned Black Pine Lake is a real pretty spot - there's another little lake off the West Chewuch Road, maybe off Cub Creek that I fished years ago that is also very pretty and quiet. Buck Lake I think it's called, maybe Bone could weigh in for specifics.

Buck Lake is very scenic. They used to plant it fairly heavily but I haven't heard much about it lately. Last time I was there was the opener of deer season probably 6 years ago and there were a couple guys fishing off the boat launch that had caught a couple cutthroat. Definitely worth a drive up there. Off the 100 Rd up the Chewuch past the West and East Chewuch Rd intersection.

Kinda mark it off the list. Back in the 70-80s we use to troll it with lead line and a fly. We stopped by there last year and it was over run with speed boats.

Agree that it can be over run with speed boats but they aren't allowed until 9am so you could have a quiet morning

Well been looking at the regs .for all the lakes suggested. And I crossed off any with Selective gear rules or catch and release.

My wife is no catch and release fisherwomen. She’s eating it or smoking it.

I havent been to buck lake in over a decade.  It was pretty back in the day.  It was kinda eutrophic and growing in with cattails really bad.   It was great flyfishing.  This is all very dated though as there wasnt a dock there then, so I imagine its worth a looksie.

Alta lake isn’t far away from twisp! Nice clean campground and facilities. Small enough to kayak on but big enough to have your own space. When I stayed there in June we caught plenty of 14”-16” trout and no gear restrictions!

You can get there no problem with one. Not sure if there are sites big enough for it though. There is plenty of camping in that area outside the campground though.

If you go back out there again, I highly recommend Patterson Lake. You can PM me for info. I did extremely well on kokanee this spring and early summer. Also, caught more crappie than I knew what to do with! Hope you had a great trip, wherever you ended up.

We (wife, dog and me) went camping last Saturday through Monday morning off the Lost River rd. by Mazama just before the Ballard campground. Had planned to stay through to Tuesday afternoon but we woke to sprinkles of rain Monday morning which was not going to stop all day/night so we packed up and headed home early    Looks like they got .3 inch of rain total Monday.

The only other time we had camped up that way was on the same weekend in 2005 when we stayed at Harts pass one night in a tent then the next night we dropped down and spent the night along the Methow at the lost river cg. An awesome trip I hoped to relive this weekend.

We went up to Harts pass Saturday afternoon where there was about 3-4 inches of snow in the shade. On the way down we went by some real mountain men looking guys in camo setting up to have a bonfire of pallets and plywood. The old skinny guy with the big beard looked either to be the friendliest guy in the world or the scariest. Saw 3 does on the drive down.

On Sunday I awoke to 2 does poking around across the rd from where we were camping. I wanted to explore a "new to us" area off the East and west Chewuch rd. We hiked the Falls Creek Falls trail and drove into Buck lake to scout out that cg. No one there at midday Sunday. The campground could have easily held my 20ft tt but the rd in may have been a tire spinner with my highway tires on the chevy tow vehicle. Nice little lake, tough shore access though as i had to walk out on some driftwood on the marshy shore to make a few dozen casts with my Roostertail spinner. No bites.

On the drive out Monday morning on Hwy 20 between Mazama and Winthrop a mountain biker was riding the trail parallel to the hwy when he suddenly decided he needed to be on the other side of the hwy., he crossed right in front of the truck in front of us as he and I hit the brakes pretty hard. If that guy would have washed the front end out on the wet pavement he would have been squished by the truck in front of us. The truck pulled over at the next rd to i assume confront the mountain biker.

-Saw a half dozen deer crossing the hwy by Loup Loup pass, one being a spike buck.
-There must have been a Subaru convention in Mazama this weekend. Everybody drives them!
-The area we camped at had no pit toilet but was VERY CLEAN! Like, little to NO GARBAGE, NO TOILET PAPER AND HUMAN EXCREMENT in the bushes. Compare this to where we usually go camping this weekend every yr off the Bumping River rd and its shocking how much trash, human waste and toilet paper is everywhere...EVERYWHERE in the Bumping area. I conclude that because this area appears to mainly be used by mountain bikers and horse riders that they are a very clean bunch compared to the folks that camp in the summer along the Bumping River rd.
-First trip pulling the 20ft travel trailer with the 08 Chevy half ton(5.3 engine) i bought this summer. I was a little dissapointed as it got 9.1 mpg. Lot of headwinds though and steep climbs. It shifted a lot too. The transmission got to 219 degrees going over Loup Loup both ways. Was in the 180 region otherwise. I'm going to look into getting a transmission cooler as i imagine that 219 will be 240 in the summer.
-Furnace wouldnt work( I.E., cold wife = unhappy wife). Tore it apart yesterday to find the propane nozzle plugged.

Sounds like a good trip all in all. I also have the '08 5.3L Chevy, and in regards to it shifting a lot, you're right. I've found that when towing basically anything, if I'm going up a grade I just put it in 3rd in tow mode and try to keep it below 3k rpms. Gas mileage sucks, but I rarely get above 200 degrees even in the summer. I'm not towing 20' campers though, so that would make a big difference.

Next time at Buck Lake, just cast from the boat launch, as good of place to fish there as anywhere else on the lake!
