BLAINE, Wash. -- A 16-year-old boy fishing with his grandfather has broken a nearly 20-year-old state record for largest Channel Catfish caught.

Cole Abshere, of Blaine, nabbed the 37.7-pound fish while spin fishing on Lake Terrell. It was measured at 42 inches in length.

"It was very exciting and very tiring," Cole Abshere told the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. "But, I did not give up the fight."

The fish broke the old record by a full 1.5 pounds, WDFW officials said. That fish as captured by Ross Kincaid in I-82 Pond No. 6 on Sept. 9, 1999.

Cole tells the WDFW it was the first time he had ever caught a catfish, and he caught the monster on an 8-pound line.

"You could go all fancy with gear, but what worked for me was a simple pole and a nightcrawler," Cole said.

Well done, Cole! About 15 years ago, I lived in nearby Ferndale and fished for trout off the docks. I caught small channel catfish several times and one older gentleman regularly caught large ones on orange paste PowerBait from his boat and sometimes off the dock. A nearby pond on the site was stocked with them, as well. No one seemed to believe me when I would post or suggest Lake Terrell as a good place to fish for channel catfish.

That's way more impressive than reeling in a humpy on a trout rod.

Less than a mile from my house, kudos to the boy, even more praise from the seafood processor that had the certified scale his catch was weighed on..... they processed and packaged his catch ..... for FREE. Thumbs up to Barleans  Seafoods.

I miss Barlean's; great fresh seafood and very nice people.
