West side late archery partner

 I am looking to spend some time with a seasoned archery elk hunter. I'll pack meat and work hard, just looking to pick up some wisdom and actually "get into the elk".
If you're willing to mentor someone for a day or more, please let me know. Based in Tacoma with a west side archery tag and a Wynoochee antlerless permit.

Depending on where you live there are a few archery clubs that you should consider visiting and joining. SKOOKUM Archers, Tacoma sportsmen club are 2 that are close by.

Hunting is hard to get hooked up with mentors for in the feild experience. It is my honest opinion that you get back what you put in.... My hunting partners came about either because of family OR where I got involved to help out.

Well the success rate in that unit is painfully low (3%) and I got smoked early season. I am struggling to find private land access. I may just ditch the tag completely and hunt somewhere with a higher success rate.
I am a member at Tacoma Rifle and Revolver club which has an archery range that I should spend more time at. I can shoot to 40yd at my house so I usually just shoot here.

Why exactly is it to hard to meet folks who are willing to mentor for elk in the field?

Why is it hard?... some thing have to be experienced to be learned.  If I take you out to "my spots" to educate your to the how and why of elk, there is a really good chance you will mess it up for me, or someone you  chatted with about it. I belive the Elk101 is as close as your likely to get without developing a strong relationship with another hunter. I've hunted elk for longer than the average and never shot one in this state. Had some close calls and great experiences but not killed one here.



Here are some interesting stats. Avg hunter sucess is an elk every 7 or 8 years. This statistic is skewed by the fact that 10-20% of hunter kill the most no matter the weapon type. And thier average is closer to every year they harvest...

With the high amount of predators I belive elk are less vocal than they used to be.  I must also say that coming from a whitetail background IMO puts you at a disadvantage because the deer and elk here dont act like WT.

It's not just hunting, it's anything with a limited resource.  You used to be able to get all kinds of invites for hunting elk/deer or fishing salmon/steelhead, until success rates dropped so much.
