Wet year up High
« on: September 17, 2019, 12:15:19 PM »
Looking like its going to be a very wet year up high, lets hear some stories from those who went out this year, I'm suspecting that folks are starting to trickle back to civilization to dry out pretty soon.

Nice buck! So... two questions. Did you bring your spotting scope? And two, did you get wet?

Well I took my .300 wsm this year and just had factory 180g loads as I didn’t have time over the summer to work on a new load as planned, had actually planned to load for my .308 and bring it due to weight. Shot was 250 steep down hill and then a follow up shot at about 40 yards after some tracking. Really just ended up in the right place at the right time, but it was a ton of work to get to “the right place”

Got back last night. My boots might be dry by the time the modern opener comes around. Good thing I have a second pair! Saw deer, nothing legal, tried chasing after one bear, but he vanished before we were close enough for a shot.

I was up at 7200 feet from Saturday 9/14 until late yesterday night. Had 2 full days of ideal hunting conditions (clear, bearable wind)

We battled fog, rain, snow constantly. Temps in the low 30s. Deer were acting funny and weren't in any of their usual hidey holes. On the bad days I still hunted timber at various elevations and still couldn't turn up a decent buck.

Pretty miserable hunt, not going to lie, but hammered a nice bear to end the hunt yesterday.

Went in the 13th and came out yesterday. Had very undesirable weather conditions with rain, snow, sloppy snow melt aftermath, fog, fog and more fog. Got a few days that cooperated better than others for glassing and turned up a handful of deer but now legal bucks. Only heard a couple shots opening day a few ridges down but an odd silence through the week. Managed to stay dry the whole week with some new gear I tried this season: Crispi Boots, Sitka Gators, rain pants/jacket and gloves. Glad I brought the Kelty Cosmic 0 Sleeping Bag as temps hit low 30's. Great Hunt, met some nice people on the trail and saw some great scenery when fog lifted enough. Good Luck Everyone.

I just got back the other day.  Weather was mostly great - light rain, then sunny and warm, then some perfect crisp fall weather, followed by more rain.  Didn't see many deer, but did find a nice 4 point at dark, but never relocated in the morning.  In hindsight, it would have been an absolutely brutal pack out, so perhaps it worked out okay.  Had a bull moose walk right through my camp.  Possibly the highlight of the trip....

Good weather for lower numbers next year.  Brutal wet and windy, foggy.  New people who have visions of awesome spotting conditions and yucks around a small camp fire, went home disillusioned!  Good, because these are the usual conditions!

Epic adventure. Rain. Snow. Cold. Gale force winds that tried to rip us off the mountain. Steep. Death marching in the dark. Lots of pain.

That about sums it up.  :chuckle:

We got pounded with rain, saw no legal shooters, but plenty of deer. We also found a new area in alpine lakes I had never seen.

Rock chuck, that is a stunning buck! I didn’t make it out for the early high buck, but got up in the high country last couple days of the regular season where my hunting partner shot a nice 3x4. I ended up getting this guy at around the 5,000 ft level in the Buckhorn Wilderness yesterday morning. I think the late season is the move up there, a lot of action.

Thanks! I’m already excited to get back up there this again year, it’s worth it to just be in the mountains 👍🏻

That’s a nice buck also!
