Leaving barrel fouled
« on: September 28, 2019, 12:20:43 AM »
So on Sunday I'm going out on a hunt, and i wanted to know what yall's thoughts were on leaving the barrel fouled the night before i go out . I'm using 100 grains of pyrodex loose powder and 250 grain powerbelt. Should i clean the barrel after i go shooting tomorrow or leave it and clean it after the Hunt on Sunday?

For a muzzleloader I am not sure it matters too much.  I have never noticed first shot difference on a first shot fouled or cleaned.  I wouldn't foul it more than one shot if you do.

Okay, Cause I planned on sighting it in today and was gonna  clean it then shoot a one shot foul out of it afterwards and put it up for the next day .

I wouldn’t only because it’s hard enough to keep muzzys clean and not corroded. Mine shoots fine with a clean bore.

I leave my modern rifles fouled, but wouldn’t recommend it for a muzzleloader. The powder is too corrosive and fouls the barrel too much.

I clean mine then pop 2 or 3 caps and leave it like that. I usually leave my muzzy loaded until I have a shot at an animal or season is over.

I've shot quite a few smoke poles and theres always been a POI shift. I always clean thoroughly and then pop 3 or 4 caps and it fouls it enough to eliminate the issue. I never hunt with a clean bore whether it be modern or muzzy :twocents:

Hunted one season with a muzzie and the only time I had a fail to fire was the one time I left the charge in it over night.

And of course that happened with a buck bedded about 60 yards away...

I never shoot mine at an animal with a clean bore. I also shoot it at the end of every day and never leave it loaded or anything to collect moisture.

My process is similar to what others have said. When I am getting ready for a muzzy hunt. I run a patch down the bore to remove any oil. Then pop a couple caps & load. After loading put a piece of tape over the muzzle. I've left the gun loaded for up to 10 days & shot it when the hunt was over & never had a problem. I always clean my muzzies the same day their fired.

Good luck on your upcoming hunts.  :hunter:
