Rabbit hunting Wyoming

Unfortunately I drew doe tags only in Wyoming this year, but we’re going to make a week long family trip of it anyways and spend some extra time relaxing down there.

I was also thinking about giving rabbit hunting a shot to kill some time and as an excuse to spend more time outside. Never done it or talked to anyone who has. In fact, I’ve never even eaten one.

I’m 100% certain I’ve seen rabbits down there but don’t really remember because I wasn’t looking for them.

Read what I could online but there isn’t a lot of info out there. My plan is to just take a 22 and wander around on BLM land.

Anyone ever do this? Would love any advice anyone has about habitat, tactics, etc.

They are up and down.  Last time we were there 3 years ago I probably ran over at least 30 just going from the hotel to the hunt.  They were everywhere.

My kid has shot some bunnies when we've been over there antelope hunting.  We got into one patch near Dubois where you could easily have filled a limit (think we stopped at about 5), but more likely to just seen one here and there.  Strikes me the small game license is about $90 or so?  I always just bite the bullet and get the license, might run across some grouse too depending on where you are.  We've also shot some sage grouse over there, but the season is short and limited on units.

Do they tend to be near riparian areas or agriculture? Or do you find them out on the prairie too? Seems like a fun way to get some exercise if they are in huntable numbers out on the BLM land.

I feel silly asking this, but I’ve just never paid attention to them before.

And yeah, the license is pretty steep. $74.00 for nonres bird and small game. The good thing about not drawing my buck tag is that I’ve got plenty left in my license budget this year.

More likely near riparian or ag, they need water nearby.  Can't travel the miles and miles for water like the antelope can.

They're not edible, but will get a lot more shooting if you go after prairie dogs. Burning through a few hundred rounds is not uncommon. I've taken a 17 HMR with me the last few years when I go antelope hunting and had loads of fun with the prairie dogs when I'm done with antelope. There are public sections with good colonies, and some private landowners would welcome someone thinning them.

Sounds like a blast. I’d love to do that sometime but I’ve got my wife along on this trip and she has an “only if we eat it” policy. I’m not complaining, though, since she likes to hunt deer and our family trips are all hunting/fishing trips, so I’ve still got it easier than most.
