There is an outfitter (or maybe just private party with horses) that puts up a big camp in there...by the time foot hunters reach it the elk are pushed out. Those basin's are smaller than they look when elk get pushed, as they often head downhill and no need to return when the camps show up.

:yeah: it’s an outfitter, he keeps his horses at Crystal mnt. But if you come in from the south of basin you might catch the elk heading out?  Hard to say.  Maybe call chinook pass outfitters and ask them if they have a camp in there this year for your time frame.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

I did a weekend hike from HWY 410 to Basin lake in July and we had a huge herd of elk around us all weekend. Bulls bugling and that basin was full of elk. I assume they get pushed out though. Gorgeous country

You have a bull tag or just spike hunting?

There's a couple long time camps up around there that aren't associated with CPO as well.

Kind of on topic, anybody know why 346 isn't open for early archery? The elk along the highway certainly know which side of the road is safe in September...

Depends on who you ask but some say at the request of the GMAC.  Personally I think it should be open.

It is crowded.  Some cheat and end up in 356.  No one is monitoring the line up top.
