fake dummy camp sights in the colockum
« on: October 01, 2019, 04:58:47 AM »
Ran in to 2 different hunters that had set up dummy camp sites in very nice camping areas, so no other hunters would camp close to them. WOW bow hunters really. not cool and I have never been up there during rifle season but its the same way, I guess I just don't get it? If ya don't like lots of people go pack in some were were yer on your own.

It happens every year so why should this year be any different

Public land but you can leave your camper in a spot for 3 weeks and claim your spot.

Not that it is right and I do not agree with it but do ypu think they are reserving spots for buddies, rifle season, or just locking them up so they have no neighbors?

I know of one camp, wall tents, that was set up last weekend for the elk muzzy opener this coming weekend and week.  It's a risk to their gear but I guess with limited time to take off they used the weekend to setup and their time off to hunt.  :dunno:

I know of some other guys in the colockum that packed there tent in with horses.  Took it down and boxed it up under a tarp and left it there for this season.  It was gone when they got there this year.

Dummy camp or not, you can expect to have neighbors. I will camp anywhere on public land that I want, and I understand the early camp setup and all, but that doesn't mean you've 'locked up' the place. I expect neighbors and kinda a zoo like atmosphere...all good.

Here's last year's Colockum dummy camp thread for the sake of reference:

2014 was a good year for the dummy camp.

Always an interesting topic when it comes up

To me this goes hand in hand with the setting up of multiple stands and bait sites to secure your areas on public land.

I believe there is a thread on this topic every year. It happens all the time and not much can be done about it!

There’s plenty that can be done. Some people just are unhappy when it’s done.

To anybody that came across my "dummy camp" with the orange and white Coleman popup last year in the Colockum, my apologies - we just booked off the mountain when it started dumping snow and collapsed my *censored*ty little tent and retreated to our old stomping grounds where we enjoyed the comforts of my brothers RV without the comforts of the company of elk.  (Little did we know it was a fluke snowstorm and cleared up within a day haha).  At least my tent was still there when I came back for it at the end of muzzie season LOL   :chuckle:

But the big question is did you get an elk?

We went to Montana this year and I was shocked at how many people were camping in 4-6 man sized coleman nylon tents.  I am not so sure that all of the nylon tents that people think are "dummy camps" really are dummy camps.
