Blackhorn breech plug issue with CVA Accura
« on: September 28, 2019, 01:04:04 PM »
I just installed a Blackhorn 209 breech plug into my CVA Accura and it isn't fitting correctly. Either the action won't fully close or when it does I can't get the hammer to cock. While I have read that you don't need grease on the plug for Blackhorn 209, the packaging that the breech plug came in says to use it (the Blackhorn 209 breech plug I'm using is made by CVA).

Did you tighten it with that wrench that’s provided

Yes. Do you think the grease is getting in the way somehow?

You also need the right firing pin for Blackhorn 209 ignition. Don't use grease on the breechplug--Teflon tape works better and easier to clean-- lightly wrap it

I am able to just hand tighten my breech plug.  not sure but I seem to remember only suppose to use the wrench the first time to seat somehow, I have not used it since first time on and off. Also do a search on remedies for blowback on the primers , less cleaning better ignition etc. Always point safely when closing breech on a primer in case it is not seated correctly or spaced right

I took the supplied wrench and made it as tight as could and everything worked fine. But I took it out a few times and I have to use the wrench every time or the hammer won't work.

UPDATE:

So I initially tightened the breech plug VERY tight with the supplied tool a couple of times. Then I came back to it the next day, took it out with the supplied tool and then it worked just fine by hand. So I guess it just needed to be screwed in a couple times very tight and then sit overnight. All is good.

Glad this worked out, I have only hand tightened my breech plug and never had an issue. I’ve always used a small amount of “C5A” anti seize on the Breech plug, wonder if dry graphite powder would work just as good without the residue (the kind you spray in a lock)?

I switched to Teflon tape on the breechplug when I switched to Blackhorn 209, much easier to clean , less mess.  Before that I used antiseize

back it out, then screw it back in TIGHT.

The grease is to prevent galling of the threads.

Use Thompson Center gorilla grease on the threads. It's kind of like chapstick and works wonders for threaded parts. Also, next time buy a Thompson Center and this wont happen... :chuckle:
