Nice job everyone! Keep them coming. I want a big blacktail so so bad. Definitely the hardest mature deer to hunt in north America.

My sons first blacktail and his first buck by himself
« Reply #46 on: October 25, 2019, 03:25:31 PM »
We got behind the gate just before shooting light and hunted into our spot. My son had a plan to keep moving the whole day while I sat and glassed. The storm came in hot at around 10 am heavy rain and winds and the fog blew in for about an hour. This put my glassing to an end so I walked back down to where he had left his pack and posted up on a cliff above the reprod. Fog lifted and I could see the road below me and around noon my son came creeping down it. He disappeared around the corner and five minutes later I hear his shot directly followed by the bucks dying bleat very loud up the valley about 800 yds from where I was sitting. Buck down I grabbed his pack and hiked down to him. He field dressed it himself which he had never done and did a fine job. Mile and a half drag and we were on our way home. Super proud of this  kid hes come a long way since our first hunt  7 years ago . He had the audacity to tell me I needed to get a .243 cuz it only takes one shot.

Vary thankful for an opportunity at this guy with only a couple of mornings to hunt this season. Had to take a neck shot with 7MM Rem at 35 yards at he pocked his head over a stump to look at me. The 3 does with him kept him from busting just long enough.
Sorry for the bad pictures, storm was coming in and I still haven't quite mastered the whole selfie thing.

Nice buck Bruce.
It's the same in our neck of the woods. Opening day you would hear at 5-6 shots at first light. Last year I didn't hear one shot all day. This year I did hear 2 shots.  Its definitely not what it was even 5 years ago.

That is a nice buck Bruce.

I also remember when I first started hunting in the 60s and into the 70s, all the shots you'd hear.  We hunted from the old family homestead on the Mox Chehalis Rd up into Capitol Forest  and sometimes the Sand Creek side. All the families that lived up the road had big hunting parties in those days and drives were how most of them hunted. Some still hunting went on too but there weren't many clearcuts then for spot and shoot or spot and stalk. On the weekends, you would hear shots all day long down at the ranch house. Wasn't uncommon for different parties to get multiple deer in a day. I can remember a couple of drives our family made that produced 3 bucks on one drive.
