Palouse area all bucks and deer gone
« on: October 19, 2019, 04:44:30 PM »
So the first 2 days of the season I was on public land and was seeing so many bucks and does it was unreal. All of a sudden they are just all gone. I hunted during the week and was the only one hunting and didn’t see any deer. I went out today and didn’t see anything either and was also the only one hunting public land. Do all the 3 points get shot up the first 2 days or something? I’m assuming they all went to private property but I’m not even seeing them in the fields. I just find it weird that after the first 3 days of the season I’m the only one in the field. Maybe I’m missing something. There was no sign of deer in the snake river breaks which I hike deep into. If I see anything it’s usually a doe and yearling. So far I’m just assuming the first 2 days of the season on the east side are amazing then the rest sucks. Don’t know if I should try new areas or not

They get pushed hard the first couple days,  and alot of the legal bucks get knocked down.  Then they learn to hide,  they are so tired from being pushed around that they hide and hold tight until you step on them. There are usually a couple legal bucks left but you gotta work hard to find them. And try like crazy to put an eye guard on every two point you see. Hunting the breaks is rough and alot of people give up after the opening weekend rush,  Eaither too sore, or too lazy to hike those canyons and push them out. Good luck,  they are there somewhere!

Takes a reasonable amount of pressure (hunters) to keep them up and on the move all day.  If you are the only one you see out there hunting, there is no pressure and so little or no movement unless you create it.

It was a low year for bucks in 139/142. Blue tongue & winter kill mostly. Tons of pressure in both those units is normal.  The full moon also didn't help. I was still seeing legal bucks on Friday though, just tough to find.

They will be in either the overlooked spots or the places no one will go.........steep, ugly, and brushy.  They can bed down and will only move when its black out.
