I can answer that next week. Was diagnosed at a ford dealer and brought to us( independent shop) for repair. It is in our lot awaiting its turn. I will see if he dropped the ford paperwork off with it and read their invoice. Its possible they recommended both.  I can say that of all the f-159s we see the 3.5 has had the least issues aside from the newer 5.0.
just starting to see a lot of them. first one we've had in our shop for failed turbos. $2800 to replace both
@deerlick
Curious to know what you're seeing. Do you work for a Ford dealer? I see a lot of F150's every day and can't say we've done many turbo replacements at all. Definitely not a lot of cases of both turbos failing at the same time.

With the factory turbos at $2800, would after market save money or improve on factory?

Thats the price for the whole job out the door. Surprisingly the price for the turbos isnt bad at just under 800 a piece.

I went to a Ford training class on the eco boost when the sheriffs department I worked for bought about a dozen cars. The trainer said they were seeing roughly 150k on turbos before they needed replaced. Sounded crazy to me as I’m a diesel mechanic and have changed turbos on an in frame overhaul at 1M miles. Not a lot of people realize how hot their turbos get after driving and do not idle their engines for a few minutes to cool them down before shutting the engine off. I’ve looked at both the 5.0 and 3.5 eco. I would lean towards the 5.0 myself. That’s just me though.

looked at the truck this morning. turbos  don't seem to be the problem. it Has broken exhaust manifold bolts so leaks and is setting under boost code.

Thanks for the follow up.

So did someone elsewhere say both turbos need to be replaced because of under-boost fault codes?

Yes it was at a ford dealer and they said it needed both turbos replaced due to p0299 underboost code and turbos failing. Customer brought to us to replace and when we questioned why they asked to double check the diagnosis. Fiund the left manifold leaking badly which can cause that code. He wants to go ahead and replace the turbos while replacing the manifold gaskets since they will be off.

Any new opinions on the gen 2 ecoboost?  Had a 13, wasn’t too impressed but interested in the gen 2 with the 10 speed tranny.

What weren’t  you impressed with?

I’d be more concerned about whether or not you like the transmission than the engine. It’s a trouble free transmission but a lot of people don’t like the way it shifts all over the place.
We’ve had a few issues with timing components but they’ve been pretty few and far between.

I picked your brain before I sold my 2013. It wasn’t a transmission concern; more engine questions/troubles. My 13 had turbo lag...a lot....with less than 50k.
The rest are just longevity questions and “feel” that doesn’t really warrant a concern  so I want to make that clear.

I meant the new 10 spd transmission. A lot of people complain about the way they (normally) shift.  Nothing wrong. Just doing what they do for maximum fuel economy and minimal emissions output. Like, light throttle pulling away from a stop.  Shift 1st to 2nd to 5th to 8th and lug way down loowwww in the RPM’s. or something along those lines.

I think I’d be ok with that as long as there isn’t the auto downshift clunk my last one had at low speeds.

I’ve got an ‘18 3.5 eco with the 10 spd trans. Seems to do alright, although mine downshifts a little on the hard side. From Seattle to Winthrop I averaged 23 mpg. Towed my 7500 lb boat from Seattle to Idaho over the summer with no issues, but only got around 10 mpg. I probably won’t want to own this truck out of warranty.

There is a service bulletin for a transmission control module software update for “shift quality enhancements” on a lot of them. Just FYI. Check with your dealer to see if it’s applicable.
