I had a very short hunt today that was fortunately blessed with success. I want to thank 3nails, as I always do, for his insight and experience, and his willingness to share his knowledge with other hunters. I want to do the same for others on down the line!
To make a long story short, I worked a few very densely forested draws with "quick sets"- not even sitting down, but standing behind a tree and rattling. Less than an hour after starting my hunt, a buck came to TEN yards, and stood there while I carefully let the rifle (Savage Model 16 .243, Federal PowerShok Copper bullets) drop down into an aiming position. He ran about 70 yards, and fell on a forest road that happened to lead to the main access road in a mere 80 yards.
Meat for winter, memories for a lifetime, and even some antlers for the wall. A successful hunt on a sunny, perfect North Idaho afternoon.
