Exo K3 Frame Recall
« on: January 30, 2020, 08:23:07 AM »
On the Exo hunt backcountry podcast they talked about people experiencing failures with the new K3 frames.  Approximately 1/150 are failing.  Anyway, they are offering to replace ALL K3 frames with the tried and trued titanium used in the K2 packs.  Sounds like a tough situation for Exo, but good on them for making it right.

Yes, got an email notification a few days ago. They’re replacing the K3 system frames that were sent out with a titanium frame (believe it’s the tried and true K2 frame with necessary K3 enhancements). Should take 4-6 weeks to get the new one. Exo does not require the old frame back. Stand up company for sure

I have a K2 and love it.  Very impressed by Steve and the way he runs the company.

Happy to hear they're handling it well. Glad I picked up that 1 year old K2 for a steal earlier last year as well   :chuckle:

Wow, I would imagine having a 0.6% failure rate would make some companies pretty happy.  That's going to cost a small company a big chunk of change and speaks quite a bit about them.

Agree!  Throughout their existence, I have never heard one negative comment on either the quality of the Exo products, or, the customer service.  The way they've addressed this issue only confirms that they will continue to get my business.

I would expect this from Exo. They have been nothing but professional and I love my K2.  I will buy my next pack from Exo

I do not have one of their pack, but I have handled the EXO Wapititalk has.  (I had to make sure he was carrying the appropriate amount of weight when hunting.)  It is a great  piece of equipment, That alone puts it on my short list if I ever want to replace my current pack.

Now hearing this, how they are voluntarily replacing frames that have not even failed, and based on such a lower failure rate?  That is phenomenal customer service that is unheard of these days.  Crap happens (and yes bears do it in the woods), even the best company in the world can have issues with their products, how they deal with it when it happens is what sets the Good from the bad and the Great from the good.

I put EXO in the Great Column hearing this sort of thing.

It's a smart play by EXO to put their product reputation and customer loyalty first over profits.  A lot of competition in the pack market and maintaining brand loyalty will be essential to their long-term success.  Glad to see Steve has the long-term view.  And a lesson learned on product testing to ensure it's market ready will help them have better offering going forward.

I thought the K3 frame was titanium, as well. What's it made of?

If I remember correctly, it's a newer space age type aluminum that was supposed to be stronger than the titanium and a little lighter. Don't quote me on it though. With that failure rate, I am torn on whether to replace mine or not. Hate to cost them the $$ unnecessarily, as I sure they would cover under warranty down the road. But my luck, if it failed, it would be during a hunt.
