Perfect. Brings me back to my first bird... I think I was about as small as that guy is. Congrats to the hunter.

Good friend called at 7:30 PST on Saturday AM to say his young hunter had killed his first-ever gobbler! Sounds like they had a fantastic hunt, and the boy had an experience he's not soon to forget. Youth Season here in Iowa begins Friday (10 April), and runs through the weekend. Julie and I have a pair of brothers to take on Friday AM, and then we'll start hunting on Monday morning. This is definitely the longest week of the year!
Best of luck to all, and congratulations to those who took their young charges out - The Deacon

Very nice! Our plans were cancelled this weekend due to a funeral we had to attend up in Port Townsend. Come on 15th!

Nice pic Yelp.
We struck out this weekend. A couple of opportunities, but nothing that resulted in a bird. Had lots of fun though. Little bit chilly. Think I'll get the boy a new pair of boots before the general season.

Well my youth and I struck out also. He had 7 different opportunities but he didn't want to shoot a jake. I have to agree that most of the turkeys are still in there winter mode, but on sunday you could see a change from Saturday with the tom's. Sunday Tom's were gobbling a lot more and fighting to.
I think by the opening week and weekend they are going to be hot.

To say I'm proud of my boy is an understatement. He's only 10 but this was actually his 4th season as a hunter. With many very close encounters with birds each time, he finally connected Sunday morning on his first turkey. The patience he showed this weekend proves that he has what it takes to be a great hunter. Sitting in a ground blind for almost the entire day Saturday while watching bird after bird walk the hillside across from us was exhausting and frustating for him and me as well. But he was all for doing it again the next morning. We didn't have to wait nearly as long as we had 5 hens and 3 jakes fly across the river and feed their way to us. Once again we were teased by a big tom who showed up to "play" with the jakes, only to run off after a few minutes. The jakes continued to follow the hens right past our blind and my son lowered the boom on his bird just before 7am.
Big thanks to the landowners who let us hunt and my buddy Troy for hooking it up for us!
