I have both. Stone in the butcher pack.
And a small pull through in my day pack.

I have gone to Havalon knives. No need to sharpen just change out the blade as needed.

Man, I’ve got a stack of them
. Diamond rods, two sided flat critters, etc. For my fixed blade knife in my pack, I eventually settled on one of these (link below). I find it works just fine to rekindle an edge when needed and it weighs nothing. Oh, and it works on broad heads also. Yes, I carry a replaceable blade knife also (OEdge) but gotta have my fixed blade with me for the majority of the work breaking down an elk.

Havalon for detail work and Outdoor Edge for the heavy work.
Used to have a Kershaw blade trader with 4 blades and a saw
Never needed to sharpened even after 3-4 animals

I won an outdoor edge sharpener somewhere. I use it all the time. It's the best field knife sharpener I've owned.

Whet stones. Have tried many, have havalon also. Nothing compares to good knife and whetstone.

This is all I use,
https://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Machine-Technology-DMT-F70C/dp/B00004WFT6/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=dmt%2Bdiamond%2Bsharpening%2Bstone%2Bcompact&qid=1574305852&sr=8-5&th=1
I’ve used most types of knives over the years and now primarily use a Victorinox 3-1/2” paring for everything from varmints to elk to bear. I never understood the need for a heavy spined knife for anything except splitting wood
I occasionally use my Havalon or other fixed blades, just because I have them primarily.

I can't imagine hauling a good stone into the field. I use replaceable blades but have one of these for my 6" butcher blade at camp.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004VWKQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They are fast and accurate with the only downside being they pull off a fair bit of metal. That said, I can still get 6-8 years out of a $15 Victorinox boning knife.

If I take a sharpener it's probably a Gossmn sharpening steel. Very similar to the old Scherade sharpening steels they used to sell.

I carried these in Afghanistan, hunts in like 4/5 states, and now have 1 in the truck, one in each pack, and one in the kitchen drawer. Best sharpener I’ve used for any type of blade. I’ve got the worksharp ken onion belt sharpener for at home stuff. With both of these all my blades stay shaving sharp. I had to buy new plates for my one I used in Afghanistan. I made $5 a knife sharpening everyone else’s blades and made more that way than actual combat pay hahaha
Oh and some green jewelers rouge on the strop! I bought a big stick 3 years ago.

Ditto on the Worksharp. Awesome tool. There is one sitting on my table as I write this, in fact.
