Shawn and his dad Bob are excellent to work with and build a very fine rifle. I've had builds done by other smiths too, Kevin Weaver (Colorado), Kirby Allen (MT), Kevin Cram (PA), and Randy Melvin (MT), all of them build extremely accurate rifles, but having a smith only be 30 minutes away is a VERY nice feature to have and saves you time and money shipping stuff back and forth. Defensive Edge also has the fastest build time of any gunsmith I've ever used, I think the longest build they've done for me took around 6 months but nearly all the others were under 3 months from drop off to pick up.You don't have to but when building on the Model 7 action, maybe consider having the smith enlarge the rear hole to the same size as the front, like the 700's are.Thank you. I will have to give them a call one of these days. My other question is do you just bring all your parts to them when you have it all or do you just have them order the stuff you want/need? First build ever so noobie to the whole process.

Shawn Carlock belongs in the Gunsmith Hall of Fame for his work perfecting the 338 Edge, one of the most affordable and accurate 1000 yard elk rifles ever.
If it's a full custom build all I provide is the scope, but if it's a semi custom built on a Rem 700, I usually have the action, stock, and scope. The current build Shawn's doing for me I already had everything except the trigger, rings and rail. Sometimes gunsmiths can get a little quirky about building on an factory action that someone else, particularly if they aren't familiar with their work, has "trued" so it's generally better if you bring them a virgin Rem action that hasn't been messed with. If you already have a trued factory action, it's helpful to know who did the work and what they all did, as well as, if the threads where single point cut or with a tap, so they can cut the barrel threads to match. If your action has never been touched, all the better.Interesting you guys keep bringing up Trigger Tech triggers, the build Shawn is doing for me now, will be my first experience with a Trigger Tech trigger.
Got my bolt back from LRI and made a trip to sportsmans warehouse for 6.5 PRC reloading supplies. Still no Retumbo in stores. Might have to change powders for the PRC and my 300RUM.
I need bottom metal for this build. I’ll look on here before I buy new. Remington Long actionColor-black (preferred)Complete kit to include magazine, follower, springAllen head action screws if you have themLet me know
The 338 Edge isn't a rifle
