This is all I use,

I’ve used most types of knives over the years and now primarily use a Victorinox 3-1/2” paring for everything from varmints to elk to bear.  I never understood the need for a heavy spined knife for anything except splitting wood :dunno: I occasionally use my Havalon or other fixed blades, just because I have them primarily.

At times I have carried a very small hard Arkansas stone, a factory second I picked up at a country store in Arkansas.  But for many years I haven't carried a sharpener in the field on day hunts, only on multiday hunt.  My Buck folder holds its razor edge plenty to gut a deer or elk and even one time to skin and quarter a moose with no need to touch up the blade.  It is HARD steel.

Those little triangular fine diamond stones with a plastic cap on each end are small, light weight and good for when I do carry something.  I keep one in my fishing vest, along with a cheap knife.  Got that vest from Stein!  Thank you!  It has seen some fish.... ;)

IME Gerber blades sharpen easily and dull quickly.  My personal preference is for hard steel that may be hard to sharpen but holds the edge.

I just started using these they have different angles so that you can use one appropriate for the style of knife you use. I have the 40° use it on pocket knife, outdoor edge and fixed blade work way better that any of the other field sharpeners I have teied.

I always like a wet-stone to put an edge on my knives. There is something cathartic about it, especially while sitting around a campfire in hunting camp.

Having said that, I just bought a Work Sharp last week. And in five draws each side and I had a knife sharp enough to shave with, in about three minutes.
Of course I then went through my gear and sharpened every blade I own including all my Leathermen. After those, I sharpened all the kitchen knives as well.
I was so amazed how fast and efficient the Work Sharp is, I ran out of things to sharpen.
LOL
