Ruger 45
« on: April 12, 2009, 03:45:50 PM »
Whats the opinion on the 45 cal. Pros and cons vs like a 357. I am not a big pistol guy but am considering a good carry piece while hunting. Can you shoot shot out of a 45 like a 410 type shell and is the ammo expensive compared to a 357 or 44? I see there is a ruger 45 bisley on the adds here and was curious about it looks like a nice pistol Tks nwhunter

I have a Ruger Blackhawk in 45 colt.  I like it a lot.  I also reload.  Most of the ammunition you will find for it is cowboy loads.  You can find the more powerful stuff like Buffalo Bore but it comes at a cost.  It is a great caliber if you reload.

CCI sells shot shells for the .45 colt just like most other popular calibers. You can shoot .410 shells from some guns chambered for .45 but not the blackhawk. The .45 colt in a handloaded in a strong sixgun such as the ruger blackhawk is everybit the equal of the .44 mag.

I have a .45 Colt barrel for my TC Contender tha can also shoot .410 shells.  It really sprays them though.  The choke that you put in for shooting .410 shells doesn't do a whole lot.

Most 45 colt ammo you find will be on the light side. This is because there are still a few 100 year old /colts out there. If you are shooting a Ruger you can buy specialty ammo from Buffalo Bore and a few others, that will equal and in some casses exceed the .44mag.  I don't know about ammo prices, but I would guess the 45 stuff is Little more than .357. Personally I would opt for the 45 over the .357 anyday, unless you wanted something in a easily concelled pistol.

http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger_Bisley45.htm   I have a couple Blackhawks 4 5/8 barrel on one, and a 7 1/2 inch barrel on a Bisley frame.  I reload and enjoy the versitility one gets with the different loads.  The above adress is a article that I found interesting.
