Monitoring???!
Does the cougar get to plead his case to  a judge and determine if he is guilty before they can shoot him.

This always concerns me when hiking with my kids. My son likes to run up the trail in front of everyone. We call him cougar bait. I'd have done more than throw a backpack at that cougar. Hope the park officials had plenty of popcorn while monitoring.

That's not how it works in California. They will be charging the father with assault and endangering the 3 year old kids life. They are monitoring the lions feelings..

the park officials were probably maintenance staff or something and didn't have a gun. I doubt they were monitoring for anything other than to keep it in the tree so Fish and game could kill it.

I hiked that park last Memorial Day Weekend.  Came down a day early for an interview in Foothill Ranch and had some time to kill in the afternoon, and the trailhead was by the hotel.  Hiking down from the top around 6pm I bumped into a guy who mentioned a previous fatal cat attack:
https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2004-jan-10-me-lion10-story.html
and another close call:
  https://abc7.com/news/oc-bicyclist-has-close-encounter-with-mountain-lion/1520053/
all in the same park, which is not that big.  Had my head on a swivel all the way back to the car.

This one was in Colorado.  Attacked a woman.  When a deputy responded, the cat went to attack her.  The cat was killed, and a few bullets found other things to hit too.

NOT as rare as you seem to think, I and my kids have been stalked by a cat several times.  There is a REASON that i get a cat tag EVEN though i don't actively hunt them.  :yike:

Let them keep multiplying unchecked. They may be a solution for CA's failed immigration and homelessness plans. Need some wolves?
