Has anyone looked at the Quality Elk proposals for this year, 2020?

The good news is that instead of 75+% reductions we are down to 30-40% reductions in the units I would apply for.  It just makes it easier to send my money to states that are better stewards of the public resource.

Oh well, hopefully Kelly can share a few recipes again in the rules book, that is super helpful and really takes the sting out of it.

Pretty sad when my odds of drawing a non resident new mexico elk tag is higher than my odds of drawing a eastside Washington tag.

It's about time they turned their brain on and started to reduce the anterless tags in Toutle, Coweeman and Willipa Hills. Now, if they would just eliminate all of them and at least try and let the herds rebuild, we may see them grow.

And it’s not even close.  Very sad.

I like some of the proposed changes to the general season dates to making them a little later.

I've stopped putting in for the quality tags.

Not only that, but once you do draw and you hunt your butt off and find the herd has been decimated.  In a matter of just the last two or so years the East side elk have been reduced by more than half and its only going to get worse.  Hardly any to no calf survival for reasons we can all argue about for days.  We had 5 Quality bull tags in 2006 in Dayton and then again I drew the tag this last year with 13 points.  The difference between the elk numbers of 2006 and 2019 were night and day.  Saw 40-50 cows after hunting a week and a half of hitting it hard hunting the entire unit and not one had a calf with it.  Big bulls will just about be totally gone in the Dayton area in 2-6 years from now.  Spike hunting will be awful this next year up there with no calf survival last year.

Theres no real arguing about the calf survival problem.  Pretty obvious what that is.

pretty sad state in the quality elk tag dept and herds in general. I rarely hunted the herds around my house just cause the bull quality was so bad for years, now that herd is looking like a quality tag in my eyes with everything that is going on in this state. It is probably one of the very few herds increasing in this state.

Why are they having spike hunts? Bull numbers are low. No way this is justified.

Unable to bait bears, unable to use hounds hunting cats, uncontrolled trophy and meat hunting by natives, poor management by WDFW, and then introduction of wolves that are twice the size of the old native wolves and letting their packs grow to out of control sizes and numbers.  This is an equation for disaster for sure!  Sad part is that we are nowhere near as bad as it is going to get here in Washington.  It is going to continue to get much worse. Top it all off with a liberal majority who could care less about the sportsman/outdoors-man and will completely shut out any kind of real science, game management, and common sense.  Not good guys and gals!  Not good at all.

Back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's you could barely see it all coming.  The snowball starts out small but when it gets going it grows at a rapid speed!  Just look at the last 10 years!  Actually look at the last 5 years!!!  BLUE MOUNTAIN ELK HERD CUT IN HALF IN JUST 2 YEARS PEOPLE!!!!  NOT A CALF TO BE SEEN!!!!  Just wait for CWD to finish it all off!  It will be here shortly!

When its all over and done the Lib's will tell us all it is because of Global Warming and Climate Change and tell us its our fault!  Us evil sportsmen are to blame! ;)

I really dont think youre giving him a fair shake.  Hes taken stances on things supporting us far beyond what any recent director has.  He can only push so hard before inslee gets rid of him, and i think hes putting his own ass at risk walking that tightrope.  If he pushes too far, inslee will have him replaced with somebody who will toe the line, and we will be a lot worse off thsn we are now.

Just some food for thought as we all send off emails for various reasons. Calling people idiot's, or libs, or any other insult is gonna immediately turn someone off to what you are trying to convey. It's that whole "you catch more bee's with honey than vinegar" thing  :twocents:

if course it's an insult. Do you see anyone using "libs" in a positive manner? No. No you don't. Reverse the rolls Jerry. Put yourself in a place where you would be getting emails arguing against your line of thinking. If an email comes right out of the gate with "I can't believe you morons are trying to do xyz". You are gonna delete the hell out of it right out of the gate and be on the offensive from the first sentence. Articulately argued topics backed up with factual information is the the only thing that will change a person's mind  :twocents:

Two major factors have brought down two of our biggest, best elk herds, it is sad and maddening.  The blues elk herd was an amazing example of success, one of the best places to hunt big bulls in the country, and in less than 3 or 4 years, it’s pathetic.  The Yakima herd is another example of two main reasons explained in the quote I sent to the director.  This all falls on the state!!  Democratic leaders fail to do anything about it, anti hunter agenda and natives run our state.  Zero native bashing here, just truth! I’ve said it many times, read “operation Cody” and you’ll know why the Yakima herd is where it is (along w predators).  So knowing that until the politics change, nothing good will happen is very depressing. I can’t imagine how Pat Fowler feels after spending decades building the blue mountain herd up to its glory, now to see it broken. Sad deal for sure.

I would disagree that Wik built the blues herd.
Pat Fowler built the blues heard and it's been  downhill since he retired.
If its brown knock it down

:yeah:
Pat Fowler built the composition of the herd.  It was pretty large in numbers even when he arrived.  He spent 36 years working on herd health and age structures. I would still guess the herd numbers were probably smaller at the end of his career than the beginning.

Also I would give Paul a call and ask what the herd drivers are.  The predator issue is real and I'm sure it's tough to manage Apr's when they don't apply to all users. I would still be curious to hear his take on habitat loss, the impact on pregnancy/ calves at critical times and the ramped up damage harvest.
