First the BLM, now the USFS is asking for nominations of landlocked parcels.

Imagine the amount of access secured if the 3000 Road to Castle Lake area at Mt St Helens had a USFS easement on it.  And imagine the loss of land to hunt and fish if Weyerhaeuser just decides to cash in on the access to all the state and federal land there and remove their free access corridor.  35,000 acres of DNR land, 8000 acres of WDFW land, and 2,000 acres unrestricted USFS land all essentially off limits.    The Monument plan even speculated on this.  "the landowners have traditionally had an open access policy (to Castle Lake area) If in the future public demand indicates the need for access rights, the USFS will acquire these rights."

The law that passed last year that is requiring the federal agencies to go thru this process required them to seek public input.

So I got a reply from Washington DC and they basically are looking for pieces completely surrounded by private land.  Since alot of land in the west is connected somewhere, somehow to other public land (even if it is miles and miles away) we need to focus on checkerboard areas with nominations.  Many of the key access fights, like the Crazy Mountain issue and the blocked trailheads at Mount St. Helens, wouldn't even qualify.
