Burnt 3 strands.... New string recommendations.
« on: March 01, 2020, 03:40:34 PM »
I’m new to archery and I’m the kind who insists on learning how to do everything myself. Sometimes to a fault. Anyway. I have a new bow and haven’t even shot it yet and while tying in my peep sight i burnt what looks like 3 strands of the bow string. I’m pretty sure I know the answer, but not being familiar with bowstrings and how they wear. Do I have to get a new string ASAP? Is it possible to limp on it at 50 pounds while I work on my form?

Update: I am going to order a new string. What do you recommend and why?

I’m sure it’ll be fine but if it was mine I’d change it out before I shot it.

Perfect opportunity to learn more!
Order a set of strings and start reading on bowtuning.
I wouldn't shoot it like it is personally.

Thanks for the input everyone. Pretty much exactly what I expected. I will order some new strings, and probably a bow press as well.  So what strings does everyone recommend and why?

Are those stock string and cables that came with the bow or after market?

Lots of good choices for after market strings and cables. Vapor Trail, brite strings(made locally in the span away), g strings(xxx archery in rainier Oregon). Just some I have used, all worked as advertised. No peep rotation and strings and cables never stretched.

Yes.  Stock strings and cables. If I replace the string do I need to replace the cables too? The bow has never been shot. I will look into those and see who makes strings for my bow.

You don’t have too replace the cables. You can just order a string and be back up and running in pretty short order. I would recommend doing strings and cables though, some bow manufacturers don’t use high quality strings and cables and they will stretch over time and cause you to have to tune your bow. Custom strings are built with BCY material and pre stretched so you won’t have peep rotation and your cables won’t stretch over time throwing your bow out of tune.

You can just buy the string for pretty cheap. I got a good string and cable set from 60X. My last string came from twisted x and it sucks. A good 1/4 peep twist.

I’ve also ordered from 60x and liked their strings,  they worked for me and they have pre assembled sets for most bows so they ship quick. You could always order the string and cables and then keep your old factory cables as backups, that’s usually what I do if I wear out a string, nice to know you have extras when season starts closing in.

Definitely change it.  If I was in hunting camp I'd probably still shoot and replace when I got home.  As for string reccomadations haven't heard a bad thing about the new GAS bow strings.

Change it. I wouldn't be afraid to shoot it, but it's on borrowed time. Plus it will likely add to the peep rotation.

Tons of good string options out there. Vapor trail, GAS, etc often have strings pre made and ship faster than fully custom string sets. My money has gone to Hogwire for my last couple sets and they have been worth the extra to me.
