New Longbow Finished...
« on: April 08, 2009, 07:16:01 AM »
And its not yours Doug!! :'(

But...it IS Machias'.

Bocote in the middle of Leopard Wood... Black glass on the back of the limbs, Brown on the belly.... little maple and micarta mixed in too...

This is a limb tip of a new limb I'm doing with foam cores instead of wood... not Machias' though...

And a small shot of another riser I put a finish on...this is my personal bow limb test riser...It has 3 sets of limbs for it so far, just test limbs...

Very nice!

Hornseeker, I've been told that I could reduce some vibration and pick up a little speed by narrowing my limb tips up on my recurve.  Right now they are close to 3/4" wide at the string groove, not the string groove itself.  A friend who builds a few bows told me I should narrow that down to about a half inch.  Looks like your bows have a fairly narrow tip.  Do you do that for that reason?

That's a beauty!  :o
I have a cherry tree in the back yard I keep thinking someone ought to use some of the 4 inch x 6ft Straight limbs  for making a bow...any takers??

Thanks all..

Doug, that bow has been "mostly" finished for about 3 months...I just spent some time getting it polished up!!!

On its way tommorrow Fred!!

Lowedog...

You can get away with bigger limb tips...wider limbs, IF your limbs are tillered perfectly and timed perfectly.... but as you move to less mass in the outter limb, you are very prone to reducing shock/vibration.... just remember, if you go from 3/4 to 1/2..you will be reducing the stiffness there... I make mine very thin... but I also put a tip wedge in to stiffen it up...

Lowedog...if you want to learn A LOT of good stuff about building bows... go to www.piratesofarchery.net and click on the bowyers gallery... Look at some of the build alongs... ask questions... there are guys there that have built hundreds and hundreds of bows...... some of the best builders period!!

Good luck...and thanks again all...
