Optics for .300 Blk out to 150 yards
« on: March 17, 2020, 09:25:26 AM »
Building a hunting .300 Blk (supersonic) for deer out to 150 yards, most likely well under 100 yards. Trying to decide between a scope and a red dot. Leaning towards red dot, but then the question becomes which one? Read a lot of good about Holosun, but see Vortex a lot, too.

Anyone hunting with a .300 Blk? What's your optics choice?

Not hunting with mine so kept open sights.  With that said, I have a vortex strikefire on my keltec sub2000 40 s&w and really like it.  This says a lot because I am not a vortex fan at all.  So far no problems and it works great.  It would fit the build for close range to 150 yards no problem.

I have scopes on my blackouts.  Don't have to worry about batteries crapping out.  I'd say a VX-freedom 1.5-4X would do all you need.  If you are only going out to 150 yards are regular duplex would be fine.

Not hunting with mine yet, but have a Sig Romeo and co-witnessed BUIS that I think will work great. Also just got a 1-8x Strike Eagle that looks great and would be a good fit and capable far past 150 yards. Not really a Vortex fan either but this seems like it will work.

I have a vortex with the reticle that has multiple aiming points. Since I hunt with both sub sonic and super loads.
With your plan of just running supers I think you will be fine with just a standard plex and something 1-6 or 2-7.

I like the UTG Bugbuster 3 to 9.  Cheap scope with a lot of features and more than acceptable from zero to about 200-250 yards.  Good compromise between a scope and a red dot.

I've tried hunting with red dots but they cover too much at 100 yards. They are fine though if you are in thick woods.

I own a crossfire 2x7 but right now I have a buckmasters 2 3x9 on my blackout. A little bulkier but you get better light transmission.

 :yeah:

I have the same scope on my 300BLK build and like it a lot.

+1 for UTG or Leapers or Centerpoint.  They work just fine for ranges out to 150 yds and you save some money to put towards more ammo.

I have a couple red dots, Sig Romeo 3 and a Bushnell CQTS, Both are great, Sig has a smaller profile.
You might want to look at the variable scopes. I have a Trijicon Accupower 1-4x24, Burris MTAC 1-4x24, and my go to favorite is the Steiner P4XI 1-4x24. All are good variable scopes, the Steiner has crystal clear glass.

I have a 1.5x5 and my son uses a 1.5x4 both in Leupold for our "brush ARs".

While you can get some great deals on EBay, always make sure it's not out of China. The counterfeits there are like looking through a shot glass with plastic knobs. Over the life of my hunting, shooting, and law enforcement I've learned to place a lot of faith in the Leupold line of scopes.  Over time, I also have developed a disgust for supporting the China manufacturing industry; hence our own made in Beaverton Oregon USA!  Why pay just a little less for some made in Asia glass when you can get real quality and lifetime warranty here?
You'll never get a Big'un if you keep shooting Little'un's.
